Glenn Hoddle admitted Cesar Azpilicueta made him laugh with his rather obvious admission that Chelsea ‘didn’t manage the game well’ following the side’s breathless 2-2 draw away at Valencia in the Champions League.

The thrilling Group H clash was a manager’s nightmare as both sets of players gave away countless chances across the 90 minutes.

Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler opened the scoring in the 40th minute before immediately Mateo Kovacic leveled with his first ever Chelsea goal.

The Blues looked to be heading for victory as Christian Pulisic put the visitors ahead just after half-time and Kepa Arrizabalaga saved Daniel Parejo’s spot-kick, but Dane Wass’ fortuitous 82nd-minute equaliser meant the points were shared.

Frank Lampard criticised his players for giving away too many chances at the Mestalla and Azpilicueta agreed that Chelsea needed to improve their game management.

The Chelsea captain told BT Sport: ‘We didn’t manage [the game] well. We had a good reaction to the first goal but when we were 2-1 up we should have created more danger, more chances.

‘Valencia are a good team, they have quality, and they pushed to the end because they wanted to qualify as well.

‘It was a good game. Both teams wanted to win, they had chances, there was a penalty, VAR – everything.

‘We’d prefer to have the three points but we have qualification in our hands against Lille at home.’

Former Chelsea and England star Hoddle enjoyed the match, but could only laugh when discussing Azpilicueta’s post-match comments.

‘It was incredible, absolutely incredible. For the neutral it must’ve been an amazing game,’ Hoddle said.

‘As a coach there’s so many things you can pick at. The entertainment value was up there with any game I’ve seen in the Champions League.

‘The chances that were missed by both sides! Just amazing.

‘It made me laugh there… Azpilicueta said “we didn’t manage the game very well” – in the 96th minute, he’s the right sided centre-back of a back-five and he’s overlapping Reece James! I don’t get it sometimes!’
