Glaswegian is first transgender Scottish man to appear on TV reality show

Meet Charlie Allan, the first Scottish trans man to appear on a TV reality show.

The 21-year-old from Glasgow and his girlfriend Chloe are one of the couples to go on the second series of reality game show True Love or True Lies? which started last night on MTV hosted by Dani Dyer.

The Scot became famous this year when he joked about asking his followers to send him £1 each so he could have his breasts surgically removed and they donated £1000 in a day.

Charlie then set up a separate GoFundMe and raised the £6000 he needed for the surgery.

While trans female Nadia Almada won the fifth series of Big Brother in 2004 and South African trans male Luke Anderson won the show in 2012, Charlie is the first trans Scot to appear in a reality show.

He said: “Attitudes have definitely improved. Younger people are often a lot more open-minded. We’re moving forward. Ultimately, transphobia’s something that needs to be eliminated.”

Asked what the surgery meant to him, Charlie said: “In one word, freedom.”

Charlie and Chloe are one of eight couples who last night entered a mansion on Malta to compete against the others to prove their love is real to win an ever-increasing prize fund. While some are real couples, others are fake.

The bumph for the show tells how Charlie and Chloe met in the female toilets of a club in Glasgow, becoming best friends.

After that, Charlie transitioned from female to male. Fast forward to Chloe’s birthday last September when the pals kissed. They’ve been together ever since.

Chloe thinks that Charlie is the most handsome guy ever, and she was shocked when she realised how fit she found him after his transition.

MTV claim the new series of True Love or True Lies? is the “most diverse cast in TV history”.

As well as trans man Charlie, couples include Scottish gay couple Scott and Ryan, lesbian couple Poppy and Parisa, amputee Bernadette and boyfriend Declan, and drag couple Timothie and Mahatma.

Timothie is trans non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. Partner Mahatma has never been in a relationship before.

The couple said they want to win to be a visible example of “what society says shouldn’t be a relationship – a gender-fluid, trans non-binary, plus-size, inter-racial, pansexual couple”.

Every night, the couples confront each other at the Love Ceremony, where they reveal to Dani, and the other couples, whose love they think is a lie.

The couple with the most votes leaves the mansion – but not before revealing if they are Lovers or Liars.

Joining host Love Island winner Dani is her dad Danny, who returns as the narrator for the series – it’s the first time the father and daughter have worked together.

The first series last year was won by Liv & Lou, who were voted as the strongest couple in the final. However, the pair, who shared a £90,000 prize pot, were revealed to be in a fake relationship.

● True Love or True Lies? is on every weeknight on MTV at 9pm until November 5.
