Stormzy, a vocal fan of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn – backing his “Grime4Corbyn” campaign, took a swipe at Tory leadership hopeful Boris Johnson during his explosive set.

Performing his recent hit Vossi Bop, Stormzy rapped: “I could never die, I’m Chuck Norris.”

The crowd completed the lyrics, chanting: “F**k the government and f** Boris.”

Hours before taking to the stage, Stormzy, 25, said he was “overwhelmed with emotions”, adding that it was “the most surreal feeling I’ve ever experienced”.

The set opened with a video featuring Jay-Z, before Stormzy took to the stage to begin the set with a performance of his 2015 track Know Me From.

Once onstage he said: “This is the greatest night of my entire life.

“And we’re only getting f****** started, I promise you that.”

The set was broadcast uncensored on BBC Two.

It included a ballet performance accompanied by text detailing how ballet shoes had not until recently been made to match black skin tones.

“Now there are ballet shoes to match all skin tones – a huge leap forward for inclusion in the ballet world,” the text said.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn took to twitter to mark the event.

“Tonight @Stormzy made history by being the first black solo British headliner at Glastonbury,” he wrote.

“The performance was political, iconic and the ballet was beautifully powerful.

“It won’t just go down in Glastonbury history – it’ll go down in our country’s cultural history. #Glasto2019”

‘KNIFE CRIME A BIG CONVERSATION’

Stormzy wore a stab vest on stage Britain fights a bloody knife-crime epidemic with 30 blade-related deaths in London since the start of 2019.

While last year was the capital’s bloodiest in almost a decade, as the number of homicides reached 135.

The youngest victim of London’s knife crime horror was 14-year-old Jaden Moodie

Londoner Stormzy has sought to raise awareness of issues effecting people from low-income backgrounds in Britain since coming to prominence with the release of his 2014 debut.

On the problem of knife crime in London, he said in April: “I think the knife crime conversation is a very, very, very a very big conversation…

“I grew up in the hood, but growing up where we grew up, you understand that it’s a bigger problem than like a big rapper saying, oh kids put the knives down.

“There are so many different dynamics to the problem that need to be dealt with on a deeper level than a song…

“So that’s why I always try and focus my energy into the actual.”

In a 2018 interview, he revealed he had himself been stabbed three times on one occasion as a young man.

Speaking during a performance at last year’s Brit Awards, the rapper said: “Theresa May, where’s the money for Grenfell?”

Seventy two people died in June 2017 when Grenfell tower, a high-rise block in west London, caught fire.

The spread of the fire has been attributed to the use of cladding on the outside of the building that was cheaper to install than alternatives but less resistant to fire.

Stormzy, real name Michael Omari, was the final act on the Pyramid Stage on Friday night.

He followed performances by George Ezra, Lauryn Hill, Bastille, Sheryl Crow, Tom Odell, and Abba tribute act Bjorn Again.

US rock band The Killers will be the main attraction on Saturday while British group The Cure headlining on Sunday.

Standard tickets for this year’s festival, taking place in Somerset’s Worthy Farm, sold out in just 36 minutes.
