Glastonbury Festival organisers ‘are set to announce the cancellation’ of this year’s event due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a fan theory on social media.
Emily Eavis had previously confirmed the news that the show must go on despite fears of the deadly virus.
She had announced a bulging list of confirmed acts for the 50th anniversary year, which she vowed would be ‘the best show on earth.’
Kendrick Lamar, Sir Paul McCartney and Taylor Swift were scheduled to headline the main Pyramid Stage, when the festival opens its doors on Worthy Farm in Pilton from Wednesday, June 24 to Sunday, June 28.
There has been speculation that with the UK going into lockdown to curtail the spread of COVID-19, that the festival was going to be the next big casualty of the summer.
Pubs, clubs and theatres have been places where the Government have recommended to avoid and with festival goers due to pay their balance for Glastonbury in the first week of April, clarification as to whether it will go ahead has been sought.
According to a fan theory on Facebook page, Glasto Chat, it would seem that there is a meeting of festival staff on Wednesday afternoon, in which the cancellation of this year’s event will be confirmed.
The post in the group reads: “I run the Glastonbury Reddit. We have paid festival staff on there. I’ve had numerous PMs from them to say they have been called into big meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
“There should be an announcement very soon after to confirm the cancellation.
“Main reasons given will be the lack of medical staff, police support and impending balance deadline.”
This has been backed up by a thread on eFestivals site forum in which one fan, close to Glasto, has written that an announcement about this year’s festival is due to happen.
While it is all speculation at the moment, this is the closest indication that the festival will be called off this year but with more than 200,000 people expected to arrive in Somerset for the event, it would seem to be the only decision that can be made in the current climate dominated by coronavirus.
