Glastonbury Festival were forced to make their live stream free after suffering technical issues ahead of this weekend’s show, which crashed when thousands tried to access it.
The festival was cancelled for the second year in a row due to the coronavirus pandemic so instead, a virtual event Live at Worthy Farm is taking place instead.
A whopping 200,000 people usually descend on the site in Pilton, Somerset but large gatherings of people have been put on hold in a bid to stop the spread of Covid-19.
Filmed across Worthy Farm, familiar landmarks such as the Pyramid Field and Stone Circle will be visible as acts take to the stage, and the event will support Glastonbury’s three main charitable partners; Oxfam, Greenpeace and WaterAid, as well as helping to secure the festival’s return in 2022.
Sadly fans reported getting messages saying they had entered an ‘invalid code’ as the online gig began.
A statement on Twitter from organisers of the online festival read: ‘So sorry to those of you who haven’t been able to get onto the stream yet. We’re speaking to Driift to find out what the issue is and trying to do everything we can to get this sorted ASAP. Please bear with us.’
Among those struggling to access the live stream was DJ Greg James who said ‘it wouldn’t be an authentic Glastonbury experience if it wasn’t a complete pain in the a**e to get in’.
The festival later updated to say that the stream would be free for all, writing: ‘You can watch the livestream here. No code required.’
Previously Emily Eavis, one of the organisers, spoke about the online event.
‘After two Glastonbury cancellations, it brings us great pleasure to announce our online live stream, which will present live music performances filmed across Worthy Farm at landmarks including the Pyramid and, for the first time ever, the Stone Circle,’ she said.
‘It will feature a rolling cast of artists and performers who have all given us enormous support by agreeing to take part in this event, showing the farm as you have never seen it.’
The impressive names scheduled to perform include Coldplay, Damon Albarn, Haim, IDLES, Jorja Smith, Kano, Michael Kiwanuka, Wolf Alice and DJ Honey Dijon who will perform as part of an uninterrupted film production.
A number of unannounced surprised performers are also set to take to the stage.
