Glass poor reviews left M Night Shyamalan in TEARS – ‘I felt distraught and worthless’

The twist-ending director has made a number of classics, as well as turkeys over the years. One of his best-loved films is superhero movie Unbreakable, which saw a surprise spin-off in Split, a movie that was similarly warmly received. Shyamalan then brought Bruce Willis, Samuel L Jackson and James McAvoy together for Glass this year, but sadly was met with poor reviews. Now Indie Wire reports the negative response made him cry.

Speaking at NYU’s Stern School of Business, the 48-year-old: “I was in London when I heard the US reviews for Glass were poor.

“I was in a makeup chair for a TV show, and I cried.

“We’d just come back from the London screenings, which were through the roof. We had only great screenings of the movie around the world.

“So essentially I wasn’t prepared. I had this false sense of being a part of the group in a safe way. But boy, did I feel distraught that day.”

Speaking with Empire, the 37-year-old said: “It was hard. It was a bummer because it felt like people were so excited about new ones and then to have people feel disappointed.”

“Also to be at an age that I didn’t really understand that’s kind of the nature of the beast. When something has that much anticipation it can almost only disappoint.

“With the perspective of time, it’s been re-evaluated by a lot of people who actually really love them now.

“There’s a very avid group of people who think they’re the best ones now! I don’t have enough to perspective to weigh in.”
