Glasgow to become Gotham City as new Batman movie to be filmed in Scotland

Holy cone on a statue – Glasgow is to be transformed into Gotham City in the new Batman movie.

Scotland’s biggest city will play a starring role in Hollywood blockbuster The Batman, starring Twilight actor Robert Pattinson, 33, as the Caped Crusader.

The big-budget production will descend on the nation next month to shoot parts of the film on Glasgow’s streets.

Parts of the city will be made to look like Batman’s fictional home, giving residents a front-row seat for the movie.

Filming will also be the first opportunity for eagle-eyed DC Comics fans to catch a glimpse of the new Batmobile. Shooting for the film has already begun in London and filming is expected to start in Glasgow in late February.

A source said: “Glasgow will be turned into Gotham City and, with the city’s architecture, it’s expected to look great in the new film.

“It will also be the first time for DC fans to see the new Batmobile so there will be lots of them prepared to stand in the rain hoping they can spot it.

“Anyone who sees the Batmobile around town will probably look twice.”

Matt Reeves, best known for his work on the most recent Planet of the Apes sequels, has written and is directing the new film.

British star Pattinson–dubbed R-Pat by fans – is following in the footsteps of Ben Affleck, Christian Bale, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney as billionaire Bruce Wayne and his alter ego.

Irishman Colin Farrell has joined the cast as The Penguin, Zoe Kravitz has been cast as Catwoman, Paul Dano has been signed as The Riddler and Andy Serkis will play butler Alfred Pennyworth.

It’s not the first visit to Glasgow for a Hollywood blockbuster.

It was famously transformed into Philadelphia for post-apocalyptic zombie flick World War Z starring Brad Pitt in 2011.

George Square was the setting for the film’s dramatic crash scene, with extras dressed as US soldiers and zombies wandering the streets.

Last year, scenes for action thriller Fast and Furious 9 starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and Idris Elba were filmed in the city.

The Warner Bros film is expected to arrive in cinemas in June 2021.

Screen Scotland said: “Screen Scotland provides a confidential locations service to film and TV productions looking to film in Scotland. This means we are unable to comment on discussions about specific productions.”

Superhero franchise Avengers: Infinity War was filmed in Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Highlands.

Filming for the £400million Marvel blockbuster boosted Scotland’s economy by around £10million and World War Z generated £3.3million in the 17 days it was filmed in Glasgow.
