Set builders have been transforming the streets of Glasgow for filming of what is believed to be the new Batgirl movie, with residents eligible for free earplugs and blackout blinds to minimise disruption.

Those who call the city’s Trongate district home, will see their beloved streets transformed into scenes from a superhero movie, just as Glasgow was back in July for filming of The Flash, complete with flashing lights and pedestrian management.

Glasgow is the new Gotham, apparently.

Workers could be seen building a Christmas market in that area of the city on Tuesday, while others hung Christmas decorations in a shop window and painted out street names.

The city also saw crew members erect graffiti-covered boards featuring Batman, teacups and crabs onto its walls on Monday as Scotland’s second city was transformed into the fictional Gotham, home to caped crusader Batman and his cousin Batgirl.

However, it’s reported that residents may have to put up with noisy action sequences and filming lasting up until 1:30am, with production company American Night distributing letters to local residents and businesses in Glasgow Cross last week.

According to the Daily Record, the letter – seen on social media – reminded those affected of what the company could offer.

‘We mentioned in our previous letter that considering the anti-social hours of some of our work, we can provide black-out material for windows and/or foam earplugs to anybody who feels they may need them,’ it read.

It continued: ‘We have been given permission by Glasgow City Council to install temporary road closures during our filming and related work, to ensure the safety of both the wider public and our film crew while we operate near these roads.

‘As mentioned previously, there may also be a requirement for some pedestrian management within the area.

‘For those homes and businesses in the immediate vicinity this may mean that we have to ask people to wait for a short period of time before being escorted to/from their destination.’

It added: ‘We appreciate that this may be an inconvenience and will endeavour to keep waiting times as short as possible.’

In The Heights breakout star Leslie Grace, 27, will play the title role in the Batgirl film, which will also star The Mummy actor Brendan Fraser and JK Simmons.

Also following in The Flash’s footsteps, Batgirl too features Michael Keaton returning to the role of Batman after first playing the Caped Crusader in the 1989 film Batman, and again in the 1993 sequel Batman Returns.

He was recently named by comic book writer Frank Miller as the ‘best Batman of all time’.

Road closures will be in place in the Merchant City area of Glasgow over several days in January for filming.

Batgirl will focus on Batgirl/Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham police commissioner Jim.

The DC Extended Universe movie, expected to debut on the HBO Max streaming service in 2022, will be directed by Bad Boys For Life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.

Batgirl will be released on HBO Max in 2022.
