GLAMOUR Tries: We tested the dot method makeup trick using a straw – here's how it went

There’s no better pastime than testing out the coolest new skincare/makeup/hair trends and snazzy innovations in beauty tech from the comfort of your own home. That said, there’s nothing more frustrating than spending upwards of £100 on a new at-home facial system or snazzy pair of hair straighteners, only to find out they don’t *actually* work.

And that’s where GLAMOUR Tries comes in: the weekly Instagram series which sees GLAMOUR editors do all of the time-consuming (and expensive) work for you.

Yep, we’ve been busy trying out all of the wacky and wonderful beauty crazes to take the internet (read: TikTok) by storm – from the Zuvi Halo (the hair dryer of dreams) to Il Makiage’s iconic foundation and the Slimyonik Air body styler. These are the products every influencer/Gen-Z beauty sleuth/beauty editor is talking about on the internet – but that you want to be sure about before parting with your money.

Thanks to GLAMOUR Tries, you won’t need to waste your hard-earned pennies on testing these innovations yourself. We’re getting in their first, giving you the lowdown and making sure you invest in products that genuinely work.

This week, Social Media Manager Luca Wetherby-Matthews used the dot method to apply her makeup. Taking inspiration from @makeupby_elliee on Instagram – who applies her concealer, bronzer, foundation and blush with the end of a straw – Luca is using L’Oréal Paris’ Infallible More Than Concealer, ICONIC London’s Sheer Bronze, Trinny London’s BFF Rebalance Tinted Serum, and YSL’s NU Lip and Cheek Tint.

“From what I can see in the video,” Luca says, “she uses the straw to create the little dots all over her face and then blends it in – I’m assuming – with a beauty sponge. I’m going to do the same and I’m going to star with concealer.”

She applies her chosen concealer with the straw in the dot method to her forehead, bridge of her nose, either side of her nostrils, chin and under eye area. “Next is bronzer,” she says.

Luca follows the same ‘map’ as the video and places dots of her bronzer to the same areas (her cheeks, eyelids, sides of her nose, forehead and jaw line), before applying the blush and foundation.

“Now that I look undeniably ridiculous, I’m going to blend.” She says. Once she’s finished, she gives her final thoughts: “Overall I’m so impressed by this. My skin looks fresher than it usually does – I don’t know how that’s happened – and I feel like everything has blended really nicely. I might have to start doing this every day.”
