But I know how to bring costs way down. Here’s how to give your rooms a makeover for absolutely nothing . . .

Face value: Head to Facebook Marketplace to find free furniture. People often want to get rid of stuff quickly, so they will give it away if you’re willing to pick it up. At a quick glance, I spotted a double bed, desk and chaise longue.
Free-for-all: Websites such as Freegle, Freecycle and Freelywheely are similar to Facebook Marketplace — I’ve found everything from paving slabs to filing boxes. You can also list items you need in “Wanted” sections and wait for people to get in touch if they have one. Don’t forget that you can shift your old homeware, too.
Try me: Head to freestuff.co.uk and magicfreebiesuk.co.uk to apply for free samples, including seed packs, candles and kitchen equipment. Paint tester pots are great for adding a splash of colour to a room. B&Q currently has a number of 10p pots in the sale — not strictly free, but it’s pretty close.
Up your game: Get creative and upcycle your furniture. Facebook groups such as Extreme Budget DIY & Life Hacks and Upcycling — Ideas And Advice are great for inspiration. I like the idea of turning a wooden stepladder into shelving or re-covering a lampshade with newspaper.
Picture this: Change up the pictures in your frames. You can print artwork from Wikimedia Commons and mrprintables.com for free. Other options include framing old wrapping paper, fabric or sentimental clothing, such as baby clothes.
