Watford defender Jose Holebas has admitted Liverpool deserve to win the title, and the remainder of the Premier League season should be cancelled over the coronavirus pandemic

COVID-19 has put a stop to sporting events across the world, including England’s top flight, which has been postponed indefinitely.

While discussions take place over how to fairly wrap up the 2019/20 season, the Reds have been left in limbo, just two wins away from claiming their first league title in over 30 years.

Greece international Holebas believes there is only one fair option, he told Sky Sports: ‘In my opinion, you have to cancel the season, for me that is pretty clear.

‘I would give Liverpool the title, they deserve it and have played incredible football this season.

‘They are clearly the number one team. I think it makes no sense to keep rescheduling all the time.’

Watford were the team to end Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the league with a surprise 3-0 win at Vicarage Road at the end of February.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have won an impressive 27 out of 29 games, but will have to wait a while longer to lift the Premier League trophy.

Whilst top-flight clubs remain committed to finishing the season, some players like Manchester United defender Luke Shaw, believe the campaign should be declared null and void.

The England left-back said: ‘Scrap it and start again. Start it again yeah. It’s gotta be you know. If we can’t carry it on it’s got to be void.’
