Gin firm toasts eightfold increase in sales to £8.5m

Stirling-based Boe Gin notched up a near eightfold rise in revenue for the year to February, according to the results filed with Companies House.

The independent gin producer said that total sales reached £8.5 million, up from £1.1 million the previous year.

It said the increase in sales had contributed to an increase of more than £1.1 million in operating profits for the previous year.

The figures lodged with Companies House by Stiffy’s Shots Ltd, owner of Boe Gin, were £9.9 million in turnover and £1.25 million in profit before tax.

The rise follows the starting of UK sales of the company’s full-strength gins and liqueurs.

Boe Gin is a small business operating from the village of Throsk near Stirling.

It said it is committed to innovation and new product development and its drinks come in distinctive colourful bottles featuring fruit and flower patterns.

At the end of 2016, Boë Violet, a full-strength gin infused with violets was launched to market.

One of the first of its kind, it was created to be bold and innovative, and to ensure the Boë brand was part of the evolution of the gin industry.

Success quickly followed with Morrisons listing the product in 276 of their stores across the UK.

By October of 2018, additional listings at 50 UK stores were secured with Morrisons and Boë can now be found in more than11,000 cocktails bars, restaurants and pubs across the country.

In February 2019, the company introduced Boë Passion, a full-strength gin flavoured with on-trend passion fruit and it has quickly proven to be popular with gin drinkers.

Boë’s popularity has seen them ranked in the top ten of best-selling gins with their wholesale and pub chain customers.

Boë Passion has also been listed by nine out of ten of Boë’s top 10 customers so success with this product is hotly anticipated.

The company said that success in sales was also down to investment in the business with the sales team having been increased from one part-time sales person in England to seven full-time staff across the UK.

It also said that it has invested in marketing, PR, event sponsorship and sampling.

Led by directors Andrew Richardson, Carlo Valente and Graham Coull, the Boë Gin range now totals six products; three gins comprising their classic Scottish Gin and two flavoured gins – Boë Passion and Boë Violet – plus three flavoured liqueurs; Peach and Hibiscus, Scottish Bramble and Spiced Orange.

Richardson said: “The success we’ve experienced this year is a huge achievement. We have expanded very rapidly from having a focus on Scotland, to Boë being enjoyed across the UK and beyond.

“Though we may be a relatively small company, our ambitions are big, and we pride ourselves on our innovation. We’ve been at the forefront of flavoured gin in the UK and are also exporting Boë Violet and Boë Passion to Spain. There are many opportunities in the UK and internationally to grow the business much further.”

Valente added: “Boë Gin has deliberately stayed under the radar over the past couple of years, choosing to let the quality, uniqueness and great taste of our products speak for themselves.

“We look forward to stepping out from the shadows and bringing vibrancy and colour to the gin industry, something we’re sure gin drinkers will love.”
