A frantic search has been launched for a 9ft-long reticulated python after it escaped from its owner’s home.

The slippery character was spotted slithering down a residential street in Cambridge before it disappeared.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary confirmed they visited the reptile’s home in the early hours of this morning, and its owner confirmed it was missing.

Reticulated pythons are the world’s longest snake, native to south-east Asia, and can grow up to 31.5 feet in length and weigh as much as 160kg.

The snakes are not venomous but can kill smaller animals by constricting around them and squeezing them to death before swallowing whole.

Although it is uncommon, the snake breed has been known to attack humans.

In June last year, Wa Tiba, 54, was found inside one of the snakes after it swallowed her whole in Indonesia.

She was discovered after her sons noticed the enormous python lounged on the ground barely able to move due to an enormous bulge in its stomach.

Anyone who sees the latest snake in Cambridge is asked to notify police on 101.
