Gianfranco Zola unhappy Chelsea did not tell him about coaching axe ahead of Frank Lampard arrival

Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola was reportedly extremely disappointed by the late manner in which he was let go by the club ahead of the appointment of new manager Frank Lampard.

Zola, who assisted fellow Italian Maurizio Sarri last season, is considered a cult hero at Stamford Bridge having played for the Blues between 1996-2003.

With the news of another fans’ favourite in Frank Lampard taking the reigns at Chelsea, however, came the announcement that there was no room for Zola in the new manager’s backroom staff.

And speaking to SunSport, Zola said: “I found out quite late and the manager positions of the other teams have all been sorted out.

“Regardless, it is a minor thing for me. It was important that it helped my career. Working for a top club with a top coach has been good for me.

“I was head coach before and my main ambition is to return to that. But to work for Maurizio and Chelsea was a great opportunity.”

Zola has hinted that he wants to remain in England following his departure from the club, having already been in a manager’s role at West Ham, Watford and Birmingham.

“The most important thing is I want to get on with my future,” he continued.

“I would like to stay in England. I will have to wait and see what happens now.

“I want to take the opportunity to say thank you very much to the players, all the coaching staff and all the supporters and the club for the wonderful year we have had.

Zola could yet remain in England

“Chelsea is in my heart and I was so proud to achieve so much for the club.”

Under Sarri and Zola Chelsea finished third in the league and won the Europa League, meaning they will play Champions League football next season.

Nevertheless, some supporters were disgruntled by the style of football on show, and many are clearly happy to see their hero Lampard replace Sarri at the Bridge.
