Ghost of Tsushima release date, platforms, gameplay and trailers

Following the hugely successful Infamous series, Sucker Punch Productions has revealed its new project: Ghost of Tsushima. It’s an open-world game set in Japan in the 1200s where you take on the role of a samurai defending against the Mongol Empire – sounds great, right?

Here’s everything we know so far about Ghost of Tsushima, including release date rumours, platforms, gameplay and the latest trailers. If you’re interested in other highly-anticipated games, take a look at our roundup of the best upcoming games

When is the Ghost of Tsushima release date?

Sadly, there was no release date given during the game’s PGW 2017 reveal, and none has been given since. We still hope we’ll see it in 2020, though with the PlayStation 5 on the way it seems likely it’ll launch with that console.

Which consoles will it come out on?

While platform support was initially unconfirmed for Ghosts of Tsushima, the Sony E3 2018 presentation put rumours to rest: like other solid single-player games including God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn, the title is a PlayStation exclusive with no word on it coming to other platforms in the future. Sorry Xbox One and PC fans!

While we thought it would be solely on the PS4, there’s now a decent chance it’ll launch on the PS5, though Sony hasn’t confirmed anything yet. We’d be surprised to see it skip the PS4 entirely, since it’s been teased for so long, so expect it to launch across both generations of PlayStation.

Story and gameplay

While little is known about what you’ll be doing in Ghost of Tsushima, the reveal trailer and accompanying blog post did provide us with a bit of information about the setting of the game.

Set in Tsushima, Japan in 1274, you take on the role of a samurai warrior defending the island against the fearsome Mongol Empire. The Empire is wreaking havoc and terrorising the local population, and as one of the last surviving samurai warriors, you fight back and build the legend of the Ghost of Tsushima using old samurai traditions and unconventional skills.

It’ll be set in an interactive open world, allowing you to explore the war-torn island of Tsushima however you want. You’ll have access not only to the katana sword favoured by the Samurai, but also a six-foot-tall longbow and other stealthy weapons to help you take down enemies in your path.

We got a more in-depth look at the blend of hardcore combat and stealth during Sony’s E3 2018 presentation – in fact, we got a whole eight minutes of gameplay, showing off the stunning scenery and ultra-gory combat.

The trailer, set in a Mongol invasion, sees the main protagonist mount a horse and charge down a hillside into a forest where he encounters a variety of sword-wielding enemies. As a samurai, the combat is based on well-timed counters and vicious attacks that lovers of gore are sure to appreciate.

The trailer also showcases you and a companion sneaking into a temple and using stealth to get the drop on the enemies. You can enjoy it in full below.

The initial reveal trailer for the game is embedded at the top of this page, so scroll back up to watch that. Here we have the E3 2018 video, which was our first proper look at gameplay:

Then just before the end of 2019 we got another teaser, though it’s a return to cinematics – in-engine at least – with no fresh gameplay:
