If you’re looking to enjoy the Great British countryside with the kids, then Shropshire is the place to go, with plenty of family-friendly cycling routes that will suit even the littlest legs.

For a traffic-free route, set off from the Darwin Geogarden in Shrewsbury and cycle through Quarry Park, following the River Severn to Uffington.

This 10-mile route takes in playgrounds, cafes, the Quarry swimming baths and plenty of cafes for a spot of lunch by the river.

Fancy a little more of a challenge? Be sure to check out the Uffington White Horse while you’re in the area and climb the ancient ridges before speeding back down on your wheels.

For a mountain biking adventure, you can’t get much better than the sweeping mountains of the Brecon Beacons.

For a knuckle-biting ride around the countryside, start from Talgarth and get ready to ride The Black Mountain Blitz; a 34-mile route with big climbs, single-track sections, and hair-raisingd escents.

For something a little lighter, take on the Usk reservoir loop for beautiful views, forest tracks and a couple of short climbs.

If you’re looking for a base camp, Brecon has plenty of accommodation on cycling routes. Check out places like Hawthorns B’n’B in Usk or The Dragons Back Pub and Bunkhouse for a cosy stay after a long ride.

With the chance to cycle from Derby to Berwick-upon-Tweed, this is the National Cycle Network’s longest route, winding through the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland National Parks.

If you’re tackling the entire route, give yourself a week to complete it and take in some of the country’s most beautiful landmarks on the way.
