Germany travel advice: Britons warned of ‘increased security’ amid holiday terrorism alert

Germany is hugely popular with Britons, with around two million UK residents making the short-haul trip every year. The European country makes or an ideal city break while its variety of festivals, including the beer heavy Oktoberfest and sparkling festive markets make for seasonal favourites. Yet, like many countries in Europe, the terror level is listed as high, with terrorists “very likely” to carry out attacks. The Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued advice for Britons on the safety precautions to take and look out for during their trip away.

The FCO website states: “The German government has announced that increased security has been put in place as a precaution at public buildings, major events, transport hubs and large public gatherings.

“You should be vigilant and follow the advice of local authorities.”

It added: “The main threat is from extremists linked to Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL). Daesh have claimed responsibility for attacks in Germany.

“The German authorities have successfully disrupted planned attacks and made a number of arrests.

“There’s a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time.”

It cited how, on 19 December 2016, a lorry was driven into a crowd at a Christmas market in central Berlin causing 12 deaths and a number of injuries.

Meanwhile, it added how on 24 July 2016, a suicide bomb outside a wine bar in Ansbach injured 15 people.

The FCO was eager to stress most visits to Germany pass without incident.

The country is currently in the midst of a heatwave sweeping throughout Europe.

Countries across Europe have issued warnings for hot weather, as temperatures are predicted to exceed 40C in some areas.
