Gerard Butler's Fallen Franchise Is Getting 3 More Movies, Possibly a TV Show

Another trilogy for the Fallen franchise is in the works. The franchise started with 2013’s Olympus Has Fallen and has grown to become a worldwide box office success. All three of the previous installments have grossed over $500 million, despite what critics may have to say about them. The majority of the box office success comes from overseas, which is key to understanding the future of the franchise, which may include a spin-off TV series too.

Fallen producer Alan Siegel says that the worldwide success made him think of other options for the future of the franchise. First of all, this means that fourth, fifth, and sixth installments are planned, which means there’s a brand-new trilogy that Gerard Butler is expected to star in. While making the latest in the franchise, Angel Has Fallen, the decision was made to make a more character-driven experience, which will be explored in the proposed new trilogy. But, the plans do not stop there.

Alan Siegel also added that his company is considering selling the Fallen franchise IP to international television for spin-offs that could star local actors. Sigel says, “If we do it in India, the star of that could come into Angel Has Fallen 4. It could be a symbiotic relationship.” This would take the Mike Banning franchise and turn it into more of a shared universe, as opposed to separation from the small and big screen. It’s a lofty goal, but the franchise is more than likely big enough to pull this off successfully.

China is largely to thank for the Has Fallen franchise doing so well at the global box office. However, that may prove to be more difficult for the future. China was an important factor in 2016’s London Has Fallen success, which brought in $52 million of the $143 million box office total. The relationship with China has become increasingly difficult over the last several months, so the franchise may need to shift marketing somewhere else. Streaming platforms will obviously be the focal point of a possible spin-off series, though it is unclear when work will begin on any of these new projects.

For now, it seems that there are going to be a lot more Has Fallen movies hitting the big screen, along with a possible TV series, or maybe even more. The Angel has Fallen Blu-ray and DVD are coming home this week. With that being said, it’s getting harder to compete with the larger studios to get the big name actors on board. Jeffrey Greenstein, president of Millennium Media, says, “The numbers that Netflix, Amazon, Disney are able to offer are substantially higher than anyone can on the independent market,” which means it might be hard to get someone attached to a Has Fallen TV series or even new movies on the way. It looks like we’re just going to have to wait and see how the world responds to the news. Deadline was the first to report on the new Has Fallen trilogy and TV series.
