Georginio Wijnaldum has said it would be ‘really sad’ if Liverpool end the season trophyless ahead of their upcoming Champions League final against Spurs next month.

Liverpool accumulated the third-highest number of points ever in a Premier League season with 97, however, it was not enough to win the title as Manchester City pipped them to it by one point.

Having fallen agonisingly short of winning a maiden league title since 1990, Liverpool will switch their attention to the Champions League in Madrid on June 1 where they will face a Spurs side they have beaten twice already this term.

Jurgen Klopp is yet to win a trophy at Liverpool, with this season’s runners-up finish in the Premier League following on from three final defeats and Wijnaldum feels that the club deserves to end their drought which stretches back to 2012.

‘If you look back when you’re on vacation on this season, I think everyone will realise we had a really good season, a wonderful season,’ the Dutchman told Liverpool’s website.

‘Ninety-seven points, we’d normally be champion with. But in this case, City had one point more and they turned champions. Overall, I think we had a good season and now is the challenge to finish with a title to make the season complete.

‘It would be really sad if we finish the season without a title, especially because I think we were quite consistent this season and we did so good.

‘I think this season deserves one.’

The Champions League final will be the first all-English affair since the 2007-08 season when Manchester United defeated Chelsea on penalties after the match ended 1-1.

Liverpool approach the game as the favourites off the back of their excellent season and will be looking to go one better compared to last year when they were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in the final.
