George Michael is being remembered across social media on the third anniversary of his death.

The legendary artist passed away on 25 December 2016 at his home in Goring-on-Thames, at the age of 53.

His cause of death was attributed to dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and a fatty liver.

This Christmas, fans and charities who worked with George have been remembering his music and his activism on Twitter.

The Terrence Huggins Trust, the UK’s leading HIV and sexual health charity, tweeted: ‘Remembering George. ?

‘It’s 3 years since the world lost this musical giant. George was an amazing friend to us, raising money and helping to change the way people see HIV.

‘Today we’re listening to George’s music and celebrating his incredible legacy. Gone but never forgotten.’

One fan replied: ‘I have just lit a candle for him. He is missed terribly.’

LGBTQ+ campaigner Tom Knight tweeted: ‘Thinking of George Michael today, three years after we tragically lost him. He was one of a kind, a born performer and such a gentle soul. George secretly donated millions over the years to charities and people facing hard times. Forever in our hearts #GeorgeMichael.’

And tweets hashtagged with #GeorgeMichael featured a little emoji of the Wham! legend, wearing a Santa hat.

Others remembered George’s secret acts of charity, as a tweet from Dan Barker went viral.

He wrote: ‘A reminder that George Michael, who died 3 years ago tomorrow, used to secretly donate money to Deal or no Deal contestants he felt needed a helping hand.’

Barker attached a screengrab of a tweet from Richard Osman, reading: ‘A woman on Deal Or No Deal told us she needed £15k for IVF treatment. George

Michael secretly phoned the next day and gave her the £15k.’

This Christmas, George is back in the UK charts, after Wham!’s Last Christmas made it to number five on the Christmas charts.

His music was also remembered in the Christmas movie Last Christmas, starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding.

And people have been using Wham!’s Last Christmas to raise money for charity with the game Whamageddon.

George sold over 80 million records worldwide with Wham! and as a solo artist, producing classics such as Careless Whisper, Faith, Freedom and his duet with Elton John, Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me.
