George Clooney and wife Amal have donated $100,000 (£79k) to help aid those in Beirut, following a devastating explosion.

The blast, which occurred at a port in Lebanon’s capital city on Tuesday, claimed the lives of more than 100 people and injured more than 5,000.

The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined.

A string of famous faces, including Ariana Grande and Priyanka Chopra, have paid tribute to the victims on social media.

And George and Amal have shared their support for those impacted by the devastation.

Confirming their generous donation in a joint statement, shared with People Magazine, they said: ‘We’re both deeply concerned for the people of Beirut and the devastation they’ve faced in the last few days.

‘Three charitable organisations we’ve found are providing essential relief on the ground: the Lebanese Red Cross, Impact Lebanon, and Baytna Baytak.

‘We will be donating $100,000 to these charities and hope that others will help in any way they can.’

Barrister Amal was born in Beirut in 1978, but moved to the UK when she was two-years-old, as her family fled during the Lebanese Civil War when she was just two years old, and they moved to Gerrards Cross in Buckinghamshire, south east England.

The country was rocked this week by the fatal explosion, which left 135 people dead and around 300,000 homeless.

Rescue teams and emergency workers have been working tirelessly to carry on the search, as well as offering support to those who are in need.

Aid workers have voiced their concerns that Lebanon may not recover from the ordeal, and have shared ways that people can help.

Islamic Relief Lebanon Country Director Nidal Ali told Metro.co.uk: ‘This is a blast not only to the sea port but to the whole country. I’ve lived through two wars before in Lebanon but I’ve never seen something like this.

‘This blast is different – the devastation, the scale of the damage, the destruction. These people are like refugees displaced in their own city.

‘What will happen is we will see starvation on the streets. The shelves will be empty in one week, two, maybe three, and after that people will be on the street looking for something to eat.

‘We don’t have the capacity to import enough food for the people. You can’t bring by aeroplanes what you used to bring by ship. Containers and whole ships were lost in the sea.’
