George and Amal Clooney have donated more than $1million (£807,000) to the coronavirus relief effort.

The generous couple, who have a home in Berkshire, are thought to have donated money to six causes.

That includes $300,000 dollars (£242,000) to the NHS, the relief effort in the Lombardy region of Italy and the Lebanese Food Bank.

Amal, an internationally renowned human rights lawyer, was born in Lebanon.

The pair also donated $250,000 (£202,000) to the Motion Picture and Television home – of which George is a board member, and to the US actors’ union SAG-AFTRA Fund.

The same sum went to the Los Angeles Mayor’s Fund, which helps provide childcare for the city’s emergency service and health care workers.

The Clooneys join a slew of A-listers who’ve been donating towards the coronavirus fight, including Angelina Jolie, who pledged $1m to combat child hunger.

Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation donated $5m (£4m) towards organisations in the US and around the world.

Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger pledged $1m to a fund supplying resources to frontline medical staff while Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively donated the same sum to two food bank charities.

Deadpool actor Ryan wrote at the time: ‘I think we can all agree, Covid-19 is an a**hole. If you can help, visit, FeedingAmerica.org and/or FoodBanksCanada.ca.’

He went on: ‘Blake and I are donating $1 million to be split between FEEDING AMERICA and FOOD BANKS CANADA. If you can give, these orgs need our help.

‘Take care of your bodies and hearts. Leave room for joy. Call someone who’s isolated and might need connection. (Hugh Jackman’s # is 1-555-[sad face]-HUGH).’

It comes as another 938 people died in the UK on Wednesday after contracting coronavirus, taking the death toll to 7,097.

A total of 60,733 people have now tested positive for coronavirus.

The latest figures emerged as Downing Street said Boris Johnson is ‘responding to treatment’ in the intensive care unit where he is being treated for coronavirus.
