Gentleman Jack: 7 questions we want to find out in season 2

The couple got their happy ending but for how long? (Picture: BBC)

Gentleman Jack stole our hearts away in the final episode of season one, with our heroines running off into the sunset together to declare the sacrament and be married.

But we already know the story is far from over, with a second installment of Lister’s adventures already confirmed by the BBC.

So what’s to come next for our lovebirds? They were given their fairytale ending but things are hardly ever that easy – especially for a gay relationship in that era.

While obviously we could cheat and read the history books, there’s every chance they could play with the couple’s timeline a bit to keep the story going.

So with that in mind, what happens next?

Here’s everything we hope to discover when the series comes back next year.

How long will their happy marriage last? (Picture: BBC)

How is everyone going to react to the marriage?

This is the big one. We love Lister and Walker together but there are going to be a fair amount of people with something to say about it.

First on the list is Walker’s relatives, Eliza and William Priestley, both of whom have been spreading rumours of the affair around town after catching them in a compromising position.

Lister’s sister Marian will also probably have more than a few things to say about it all too.

That’s before we even get into the idea of how her business partners are going to take the news.

Will they be forced to keep their romance a secret?

Will Susannah and Thomas get their happy ending? (Picture: BBC)

Is Thomas Sowden’s pig-gate about to be discovered?

Thomas was given the chance of a happy ending at the end of this episode as the town gathered to celebrate his marriage.

However, his now father-in-law Sam Washington was far from convinced, and then Sam Sowden dropped the bombshell that he couldn’t write.

That means that he couldn’t have written about Thomas’ missing father heading to America – and that there’s something Thomas is lying about.

Could he uncover what happened? Or could he even end up the next person heading for the pigsty?

What is Mariana going to say?

Mariana is a complicated soul because despite being married to someone else she clearly still holds a torch for Lister.

She was livid enough when Lister confessed that she’d proposed to Walker, even though she wouldn’t leave her husband for her.

So what’s she going to do when she discovers that they’ve actually gone and tied the knot?

Lister, in Mariana’s mind, is her soulmate, so it looks like Walker could end up with a fight on her hands.

Why has Sam Sowden come back to Halifax?

Sam Sowden made a sudden reappearance in the final episode with his tail between his legs looking for somewhere to stay.

Agreeing to have him move in (provided he doesn’t drink and attends church with them) Sam at the moment doesn’t seem to be that much trouble.

But what really caused him to come back now? Will he make a claim for the family farm?

Something tells us he’s there for more than he’s letting on at the moment.

Is Aunt Anne going to be OK?

Aunt Anne is one of the few people around the Shibden estate who is just unconditionally loving to everyone.

Which is why we got really scared when it appeared that we might have to say goodbye to her when her leg got gangrene.

But byt the time Anne rushed home from Europe, she seemed better than ever.

Can we please just protect her and make sure she’s alright? Because we don’t think Lister will fare well without her.

Rawson’s cruel behaviour could have hinted at an evil plan (Picture: BBC)

Did the Rawsons have anything to do with the pits being sunk?

Lister’s livelihood has been thrown up in the air when it was revealed that her pits have been drowned – taking the coal with it.

It could cost her Shibden Hall – a really dangerous risk that could have a massive effect not just on her, but her family.

After all the arguments and vile threats from the Rawsons about her being careful in their path, could the thieves have done this to spite her?

Seeing as they had her brutally battered to within an inch of her life several episodes ago, you can’t say that they’re not above stooping to that level.

Will Elizabeth leave her husband and return to Halifax?

Walker said it herself after returning from Scotland that she feared for her sister’s wellbeing and marriage.

As much as she loved her chldren, Elizabeth was clearly unhappy and her husband was hiding a spiteful streak that could potentially be abusive.

Sutherland was determined to have Walker marry his relative so she could pay off his debts – and it almost worked, had Elizabeth not told her to run.

So we’re sure that she’s had hell to pay from him as a result. Could Elizabeth follow her sister’s lead, follow her heart and leave him?

Gentleman Jack is available now on BBC iPlayer.
