Gemma Atkinson: ‘Something changed in me' Strictly star talks doubts before meeting Gorka

Strictly Come Dancing 2017 finalist Gemma Atkinson, 34, and Gorka Marquez, 29, introduced their daughter Mia to the world back in July; their first child together.

In a rare interview, the actress admitted she didn’t see children in her future, but said her mindset changed after meeting the pro.

Speaking to Giovanna Fletcher, 34, on her Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast, she joked she always thought she’d be “40-odd with six or seven dogs”.

Presenter Giovanna, who has two children with McFly star Tom Fletcher, asked Gemma if she ever thought of herself as a mum.

The latter explained her sister Nina, a mother-of-three, was always the “mumsy” one out of the pair while she would be out “causing havoc”.

She added: “It’s probably going to sound really bad but I never – not that I didn’t want children – like I said, my sister’s got three, my two best friends have got two babies each so I’ve grown up around babies.

“But until I met Gorka, I couldn’t picture myself with a family with anybody because the relationships that I had previously weren’t stable enough for me to even consider having a child.

“I’d just always imagined that I’d be 40-odd with six or seven dogs and I’d be fine with it.

“I just – when I met Gorka, something changed in me and I thought, ‘Ooh there’s a softer side of me’.”

Gemma and Gorka struck up a romance after meeting on Strictly Come Dancing in 2017.

At the time, the ex Emmerdale star danced with Aljaž Škorjanec, 29, while Gorka was partnered up with Alexandra Burke, 31.

After weeks of romance speculation, the pair confirmed they were in a relationship in a gushing Instagram post on Valentine’s Day.

Back in January this year, the loved-up couple revealed they were expecting their first baby together.

Gemma and Gorka shared a picture of their new daughter Mia Louise Marquez back in July.

Last month, Gemma Atkinson spoke out about her traumatic birth during an interview with Gorka on Loose Women.

The radio host told panelists she had to undergo an emergency C-section, also known as a Caesarean, after their little one’s heart rate dropped during contractions.

Gemma also suffered a haemorrhage, but was unaware of the blood at first due to being numb from her epidural.

Gorka Marquez described the ordeal as “frustrating” as he didn’t know what was happening.

Reflecting on the experience, he said: “It’s the most frustrating situation.

“I didn’t know what was happening, doctors rushing in, no one tells me anything until the end.

“But she did so well I was so proud of her,” he added while proudly looking at Gemma.”
