Gegard Mousasi was consoled by Rafael Lovato Jr’s mother after her son stripped the champion to become the new Bellator middleweight king.

Lovato Jr edged a tight contest in London, with his expert jiu-jitsu proving the difference on the night.

Mousasi came back into the fight in the third and fourth round, knocking Lovato Jr down and opening up a nasty cut on the side of the challenger’s head.

But Lovato Jr’s successful takedown early in the final round gave the American the chance to spend the remainder of the round on the canvas.

Mousasi defended submission attempts, but relinquished his title to Lovato Jr moments later when two of the three judges saw it 48-47 for the challenger.

The beaten champion left the cage immediately after hearing the judges’ decision, but was stopped by Lovato Jr’s mother.

She consoled Mousasi, who accepted her commiserations, before disappearing backstage.
