Following last week’s release of shooter Gears 5 for Xbox One and PC, developer The Coalition and tournament organizer PGL have announced additional details for the upcoming 2019-20 competitive season.

The initial Gears 5 esports season, first announced in July, will feature more than $2M in total prizing. The season will include three major Open events ahead of July 2020’s World Championship. The San Diego Open will be held from Dec. 6-8, with the Mexico City Open to follow in March 2020. No locations have been announced yet for the third Open in May 2020 or the World Championship.

Gears 5 will feature a Pro League in North America, Central America, and Europe, which will begin on Oct. 21. The overall esports initiative will also include South America and Asian Pacific teams in international competitions, as well as various amateur events and tournaments at Microsoft Store locations. The Coalition and PGL will also provide additional travel support for teams to attend international tournaments.

Gears of War 4 tournaments awarded more than $3M in prizing since that game’s release in 2016, with OpTic Gaming’s former squad earning more than $1.1M of that amount. That team recently signed to NRG Esports, and yesterday, NRG announced that it has added former OpTic Gaming CEO Hector “H3CZ” Rodriguez as its new co-CEO.
