RUTH Jones has hinted Gavin and Stacey will return after the “astonishing” reaction to the Christmas special trailer.
The BBC comedy ran from 2007 to 2010 and is back for a one off episode on Christmas day, thanks to popular demand.
But co-creator Ruth, who plays Nessa, admitted that it would be foolish to rule out a series four.
The 53-year-old said: “I think it would be churlish of me to say there won’t be any more. The honest truth is there are no plans.
She added: “But I don’t think I could ever say never.”
The actress said she was pleased with the way that the special turned out, seeing best friends Nessa and Stacey (Joanna Page) together again and bossing around Uncle Bryn.
She continued in the latest issue of Red magazine: “I get to be really rude and bossy. Being back in Barry again, wearing that leather skirt and being down the races or in Gwen’s house was just bliss.
“What’s lovely about the Christmas special is see a softer side to Nessa in her love for Neil, her son. She’s not a conventional mum, but she’s very loving.”
And she was shocked by the reaction to the trailer, released last week, adding: “They were lovely phone calls. Everybody was over the moon … it was astonishing.”
Gavin and Stacey fans couldn’t contain their excitement as the full trailer for the Christmas special dropped last week.
The trailer starts with Smithy (James Corden) arriving at Gavin’s house and bursting into Elton John’s Step Into Christmas.
Gavin’s parents Pam and Mick join them and it’s not long until they are all excitedly dancing around the hallway.
Next they are seen at Gwen’s home in Barry where Uncle Bryn is trying to make the Christmas lunch for everyone.
His turkey is in the oven, but when Bryn (Rob Brydon) goes to pick up a pot, he burns his hand and knocks over his cranberry stuffing.
He ends up on all fours over the smashed bowl, telling Stacey and Nessa: “Stacey, would you ever so kindly inform everyone that dinner will be slightly delayed.”
It didn’t ruin the day though as they are soon seen laughing over the Christmas table before heading to the pub for a dance and sing song.
The trailer went down very well with fans who rushed to discuss it on Twitter.
One person wrote: “The Gavin and Stacey Christmas special trailer is everything I wanted and more.”
