Gavin and Stacey’s Laura Aikman is living for the Sonia memes as Smithy’s girlfriend becomes villain of Christmas special

Gavin and Stacey’s Christmas Special saw a brand new member of the gang in Sonia – and it’s safe to say that no one, including the Shipman and Wests, liked her viewer much.

The snooty newcomer, played by Laura Aikman, was introduced as Smithy’s (James Corden) new girlfriend – who despite dating for nine months, he’d never even introduced to bestie Gavin (Mathew Horne).

But that didn’t stop him from falling head-over-heels for her, and was even thinking of proposing to her on Boxing Day at her grandparents’ house.

Christmas Day ended in disaster though, and Sonia felt uncomfortable as she made jokes about Smithy’s weight, Nessa not being ‘someone to worry about’ and failing to get in on the group’s jokes.

In the end, she left rather than spend the night on the floor of Neil the Baby’s room, and it didn’t look good for either of them.

But Laura, the actress who plays her, couldn’t be more glad about her involvement in the show, and is now lapping up the memes being made about her character.

Sharing a selfie on Twitter with on-screen boyf James Corden, the star wrote: ‘Had the absolute tome of my life doing #GavinandStacey #GavinAndStaceyChristmasSpecial

‘Thank you so much everyone for having me and for all the hilarious #sonia memes.’

Here are some of the best ones:

Whether we’ll see Sonia again or not remained to be seen, as there’s a lot of unanswered questions for a show that’s meant to be a one-off.

Ending on one hell of a game-changing cliffhanger, Laura’s character might have a fight on her hand for her man’s heart.

Despite there being obviously room for another one off in the pipeline, Ruth Jones is insistent that there is nothing planned for the gang any time soon.

Mainly due to the fact that co-writer James Corden is now set up with a life in LA, while she remains here over in the UK.

Speaking ahead of the episode dropping, Ruth said: ‘I think we always… obviously the journey between Smithy and Nessa is an interesting one and as you’ve seen now, it’s not necessarily over because it’s ended on a proposal.’

‘Who knows?,’ she said. ‘The thing is, at the moment, hand on heart, there is no plan. Nobody’s going to believe me ever again anyway! But there is no plan, there is no post-it notes. So there’s been no, sitting in the room, mapping out another episode.’

‘But then obviously there is room for it to move on…So, all I’m going to say now is who knows?,’ she then teased.

Gavin and Stacey is available now on BBC iPlayer and Britbox.
