Gavin And Stacey: new Christmas special announced

After nearly a decade with no further Gavin And Stacey adventures of note, you’d be forgiven for thinking the series was done for good, but creators Ruth Jones and James Corden have been cooking up a special episode for the Beeb’s Christmas schedule, as revealed by Corden over on Twitter…

Yep, a Gavin And Stacey Yuletide offering is on the way, with Jones and Corden returning as Nessa and Smithy. Mathew Horne will also be back as Gavin, as will Joanna Page as Stacey. Rob Brydon’s Bryn, Larry Lamb’s Mick, Melanie Walters’ Gwen and Alison Steadman’s Pam will all be along for the ride, too.

The award-winning series, which ended in 2010, focused on Essex boy Gavin and Welsh girl Stacey, who ended up in a long-distance relationship, before finally getting together to bridge the gap between them. The series originally ended with Stacey pregnant with Gavin’s baby.

“Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey – where they might be today and what their lives might look like. And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one hour special. We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy”, said Jones and Corden in a statement. “We’re so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen.”

The BBC’s Director of Content, Charlotte Moore, added: “Everyone at the BBC is hugely excited to be welcoming back Gavin and Stacey to BBC One this Christmas. We can’t wait to see what’s happened to everyone over the last nine years, and what’s next for one of the nation’s favourite comedy families.”

More on this as it arrives.
