Gary Neville suggests key tactic Frank Lampard should use to keep Chelsea ace at club

Frank Lampard should utilise N’Golo Kante in a deeper role if he wants to keep the Frenchman at Chelsea, according to Gary Neville.

The France international has been deployed out of his favoured position in recent years, with former Blues boss Maurizio Sarri giving the midfielder a license to roam the middle of the park.

Lampard also utilised Kante out of his preferred position during his first season at Chelsea, although he did occasionally deploy him as a defensive midfielder.

This season, Kante has been deployed at the bottom of a midfield triangle, with Mason Mount and Kai Havertz playing ahead of him in the Blues’ 3-0 victory over Burnley this past weekend.

Kante – who was surprisingly linked with a move away from west London in the summer – was one of Chelsea’s star performers against the Clarets; breaking up play with interceptions and tackles.

“They read the danger, they break up attacks and they are a centre-backs’ dream.

“Playing Kante there would seem to be the logical conclusion in keeping him at the club.”

Neville, like many others, was shocked to see reports linking Kante with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

He added: “When I saw reports over the summer that Jorginho was going to leave, I wasn’t surprised.

“When I saw reports over the summer that Kante might leave, I was shocked.

“I thought, ‘Frank, he is not a player you want to lose’.

“He is a unique player and every player in that squad must love him. He does that job brilliantly.”

Kante and his Chelsea team-mates will be back in action on Wednesday night, welcoming Ligue 1 side Rennes to Stamford Bridge for their third Champions League Group E match.
