Gary Neville insists Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must be backed in the transfer market this summer if he is to prosper as Manchester United manager.

The Norwegian was confirmed as Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor on Thursday having masterminded a stunning run of form which has seen the Old Trafford club qualify for the quarter finals of the Champions League and move into contention for a top four finish in the Premier League.

Solskjaer has been responsible for rejuvenating the likes of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford but Neville fears the current squad is still some way short of being capable of challenging the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool who are currently vying for the league title.

‘I’m delighted for Ole,’ Neville wrote on Twitter. ‘I didn’t think this would happen when he was appointed.

‘However the results and spirit in the club have been incredible since he arrived and he deserves it.

‘He now needs support in the transfer market in terms of finance and the right resource!’

United have been linked with moves for a series of A-List defenders in recent weeks with Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly thought to be at the top of their wishlist.

Woodward frustrated Mourinho last summer when he failed to make funds available for a top class centre-back as deals for the likes of Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng failed to materialise.

Commenting on the appointment on Solskjaer, Woodward said: ‘Since coming in as caretaker manager in December, the results Ole has delivered speak for themselves.

‘More than just performances and results, Ole brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and as a coach, coupled with a desire to give young players their chance and a deep understanding of the culture of the club. This all means that he is the right person to take Manchester United forward.

‘I want to thank Ole and the coaching team for everything they have done so far and congratulate him on this richly deserved appointment. The fans and everyone at the club are behind him as he looks to take us where we need to be and build the next stage of our history.’
