Gary Neville piles the pressure on Harry Maguire as he's named new Man Utd captain

Gary Neville has warned Harry Maguire that “s*** will come thick and fast” now that he is Manchester United’s new captain.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the centre-back would be the club’s new permanent skipper as Ashley Young neared the Old Trafford exit.

After Young’s transfer to Inter Milan was confirmed on Friday night, Maguire took to Twitter to officially announce he is the new United captain.

He wrote: “Dream come true to be named the Manchester United captain. Proud moment and huge honour. Just want to wish Ashley Young all the best at Inter Milan.”

A number of fellow and former professionals congratulated Maguire on the achievement.

Among them, ex-Red Devils right back Neville wished the centre-back all the best. But he did so alongside a warning.

Neville tweeted: “Congratulations! The s*** will come thick and fast in the next year or two. Stick at it as you are the captain of the biggest club in the world and it will rise and win again.”

Maguire later replied to Neville: “Thanks a lot, appreciate the message.”

Solskjaer had told Maguire in advance of his plan to hand him the captain’s armband the moment Young’s move to Inter was confirmed.

United had attempted to keep hold of the 34-year-old wing-back for another season, but Young had his heart set on trying his hand in Serie A.

“He [the manager] pulled me to one side and told me that if Ashley leaves, I’d be appointed as the next captain,” explained Maguire.

“He wished me well and told me to keep doing what I’m doing. I was really proud, it’s such an honour to play for this club, let alone captain it.”
