Gary Neville has pleaded with Manchester United to get rid of ‘absolute disaster’ Alexis Sanchez amid speculation that the forward could be joining Inter Milan on loan this summer

Sanchez is desperate for an escape route after a woeful 18-month spell at Old Trafford in which the 30-year-old has only managed five goals in all competitions.

It’s understood Inter have offered to pay half of Sanchez’s £400,000-a-week wages in a potential deal which would include an option to buy the Chilean for £14million at the end of the season.

The Serie A outfit have until the European transfer window closes on September 2 to reach an agreement with United for the ex-Barcelona star.

While Neville had high hopes for Sanchez when he completed a move from Arsenal in January 2018, the former right-back has run out of patience and ordered United to get rid of the attacker.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, United legend Neville said: ‘You talk about Alexis Sanchez going over to Italy… and I welcomed him to the club because I thought he would be a forward who could play all across the line, he would score goals, he’s tenacious.

‘But he’s been a disaster. He’s been an absolute disaster. I have no idea what’s happened to Alexis Sanchez.

‘There must be two of them. The one we saw playing for Barcelona and Arsenal for five, six, seven, eight years. The one that’s turned up in Manchester… I have no idea what it is and I have so much respect for him in terms of what I saw.

‘We talked so well about him but they need to now get him out the club. [Romelu] Lukaku doesn’t want to be there… get him out the club. It’s a phased transition, this.’

Neville has been impressed with United’s early performances in the Premier League this season and is confident Solskjaer now has a core of players to take the club forward.

‘Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has four or five players at the club that probably don’t want to be there,’ the former United and England full-back added.

‘He needs to get rid of a couple this year, a couple next year and then I look at that team… [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka, [David] De Gea, [Harry] Maguire, [Victor] Lindelof, [Luke] Shaw, [Scott] McTominay – [Paul] Pogba is still a question because you always think he might want to leave – [Daniel] James, [Anthony] Martial, [Marcus] Rashford and [Jesse] Lingard. Do you know something? They all want to be at the club.

‘Pogba is the one that maybe you would say has aspirations to play elsewhere but even he has settled down.

‘It’s a team that’s got energy and youth, I like it, it’s not slow, it’s not methodical, it’s not boring. They look like they play on the counter-attack, they’re having a go, it needs two or three senior additions that will make them really good.’

Earlier this week, Solskjaer admitted there was a ‘chance’ Sanchez could join Inter and the Chile international featured in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Tuesday to work on his fitness.

Asked about Sanchez’s future following United’s 1-1 draw with Wolves, Solskjaer replied: ‘There’s still a couple of weeks left of the transfer window.

‘And there is a chance some clubs have shown interest in Alexis, so we’ll see what happens.

‘I can’t update you more than that.’
