Gary Neville calls for VAR change after Atletico Madrid handball incident

Gary Neville has called for the Premier League to change their VAR protocol – after watching how it works in the Champions League.

Manchester United legend Neville spent his Wednesday night in Madrid watching Atletico Madrid take on Lokomotiv Moscow in a crucial last group stage game in the premium European competition.

Atleti were awarded two spot kicks in the first half at the Wanda Metropolitano – the first a simple decision in the second minute after Joao Felix was tripped, which Kieran Trippier missed.

But in the 17th minute, referee Viktor Kassai needed some assistance for the video assistant referee after a hand ball decision.

Vedran Corluka attempted to head the ball clear as it entered the box, but it struck teammate Rifat Zhemaletdinov on the top of the arm.

Hungarian Kassai initially waved away the penalty claims, but after the ball stopped he decided to consult VAR.

After taking advice from his ear-piece, he went over to the touchline to consult the touchline monitor – where he decided to award the penalty.

On this occasion, Felix converted with a coolly struck penalty into the bottom corner.

And Neville was happy with how the system worked in Europe, and has asked PMGOL chiefs to allow Premier League officials to consult screens to help their decision making.

“In Madrid and just witnessed the overturning of a handball decision through VAR,” Neville tweeted.

“The referee going over to the monitor is in my opinion a far better experience for fans in the stadium and it also feels right the on field referee being given the final call.”

Neville’s Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has been outspoken in his criticism of the way the VAR system is utilised.

Carragher explained last month: “The whole point of VAR is to help referees and we speak so often in the job I have speaking about referees and decisions.”
