Gary Lineker’s son George has signed up to be an NHS volunteer, after recovering from coronavirus-like symptoms.

The 28-year-old was never tested for coronavirus, but ‘assumes’ he was struck down with Covid-19 after experiencing symptoms related to the virus.

George kept fans updated with his condition over a 15-day period and after likening the illness to a ‘rollercoaster’, he’s revealed he’s now signed up to help with volunteering efforts.

Taking to Instagram, George shared a screenshot of his volunteer profile after his application to be an NHS volunteer was successful. He captioned his post: ‘Gotta do your bit … looking forward to volunteering for the NHS.’

His famous footballer dad Gary was all for it and commented: ‘Yes G. Proud of you ????’

Many of George’s followers were quick to praise him for offering a helping hand, but that didn’t stop some people from accusing George of just ‘jumping on the bandwagon’.

He wasn’t having any of it, though, and hit back: ‘Applied 10 days ago. That’s my profile on the app saying I got the call up. Idiot.’

Spurred on by his own experience, no doubt.

George tweeted that he was experiencing mild symptoms of coronavirus. Despite feeling fine, he lost his sense of smell and taste for 15 days.

On day eight, he tweeted: ‘If anyone is after an update I’m on day 8 of not smelling or tasting anything, pretty weird. That’s the only thing though still feel 100%. Sounds like there’s a lot in the same boat as me. Obviously not been tested so can’t be sure if it’s Coronavirus or not.’

He later revealed: ‘Day 15 and my taste and smell is back . Cheers all , it’s been emotional.’

Other symptoms of coronavirus include high temperature, a continuous cough, flu-like symptoms including tiredness, muscle aches and a headache.

Symptoms tend to last between 7 to 10 days, with people showing symptoms required to self isolate for a minimum of seven days.

Coronavirus cases in the UK have almost reached 48,000, with the number of deaths rising to 4,934.

Dad Gary revealed he and his eldest son George had been self-isolating as a precaution, after George started to experience symptoms.

The Match of the Day presenter tweeted: ‘In self-isolation as @GeorgeLineker has symptoms. They’re not the regular ones, but complete loss of sense of taste and smell.

‘Odd these have not been pointed out much. Been nearly a week and has spent time at mine. I’ve been vigilant, hand washing/distancing but isolation it is.

‘Worth being careful if you lose your sense of taste and smell. You could unknowingly have the virus. I checked all this with a doctor before sharing the information. Stay safe.’
