Gary Lineker destroyed Piers Morgan on Twitter with a well-timed tweet about Cristiano Ronaldo.
Good Morning Britain host Morgan sat down with the Juventus superstar last year for a wide-ranging interview, in which he gushed over Ronaldo.
Morgan told the Portuguese he believes him to be the world’s best footballer in a bid to put the Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi debate to bed.
Anyone who follows Lineker on Twitter will know the Match of the Day host is a big fan of Messi.
But on Wednesday morning he explained to his followers that this doesn’t mean to say he dismisses the brilliance of Ronaldo.
He tweeted: “Message to Ronaldo fans: When I tweet about the brilliance of Messi, it doesn’t mean I don’t admire Ronaldo.
“Message to Messi fans: When I tweet about Ronaldo, it doesn’t mean I don’t admire Messi. It’s possible to love both of these super human footballers. Enjoy them both.”
Tweeting about Ronaldo, although not in direct response to Lineker, Morgan posted a video of the Portuguese scoring a screamer for Juve, also on Wednesday morning.
Alongside it he wrote: “BOOOM! This is why Ronaldo is the GOAT. Messi can’t do this.”
Spotting the tweet, Lineker decided to respond: “Fabulous goal, breathtaking footballer, but you really should start watching football before making silly statements.”
Alongside his own tweet, he included a video compilation of Messi scoring stunners.
Not one to be outdone, Morgan hit back, this time directly at Lineker: “I’ve watched a lot of football and won as many League titles and International trophies as you. (You didn’t even win one at Barcelona!)”
Lineker then replied: “Again, factually incorrect. I won the old second division (Championship) with Leicester City.”
For a short while the discussion died down, but it seems Lineker was doing some digging – looking for something humorous to hit Morgan with. And he found.
Lineker posted a screen-shot of an old Morgan tweet reading: “Messi’s the greatest footballer ever, and Ronaldo’s the second best. Any further debate is superfluous – I have spoken.”
Alongside it he added: “Hope Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t know you have spoken, Piers Morgan.” Awkward.
