Games out this week: Concrete Genie, GRID, Yooka-Laylee, Frostpunk and MORE

We’re into October, and Summer is well and truly a distant memory if the recent weather is anything to go by. Don’t fear though, we’ve plucked the week’s biggest gaming releases for you to feast your eyes on.

And if you’re looking to find even more new game launches for the month of October, we’ve got a handy guide you can read here

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair – October 8

Kicking things off is a sequel to the 3D platformer funded by Kickstarter, Yooka-Laylee. While that game was a fun, if flawed, 3D platformer in the vein of Banjo Kazooie, Impossible Lair sees our heroes turn their platforming skills to 2.5D.

Think Donkey Kong Country and you’re on the right track, and early reports suggest it’s well worth a try – with the game’s Metacritic score currently standing at 82 for the PS4 version.

The game launches on Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox One, so everyone can enjoy the platforming fun.

Concrete Genie – October 9

Next up is a brand new PS4 exclusive. And while it isn’t as high profile as God Of War or Marvel’s Spider-Man, Concrete Genie could surprise you.

It tells the story of a talented young artist tormented by bullies who destroy his sketchpad, scattering pages throughout the city of Denska. Thankfully, our protagonist stumbles upon a magical paintbrush that brings his artwork to life.

The game even offers PlayStation VR functionality for those lucky enough to own one of Sony’s headsets.

Frostpunk: Console Edition – October 11

If you’ve not heard of Frostpunk, then be warned – it’s not for the faint of heart. It revolves around maintaining a city, although unlike SimCity or Cities: Skylines, Frostpunk has a much darker tone.

Every choice weighs heavily, from dispatching search parties for resources, to digging up the dead to provide food. It’s the kind of crisis-management simulator that turns even the most idealistic of players into barbarians.

If you reckon you can stomach it, Frostpunk: Console Edition is an excellent strategy title for PS4 and Xbox One.

GRID – October 11

The successor to GRID Autosport, GRID offers even more motoring goodness. In addition to all the licensed cars and gorgeous race courses you would expect, Codemasters has taken cues from the Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War Middle-earth games – yes, really!

The latest GRID release features its own spin on the Nemesis system, meaning each of the game’s 400 unique drivers will remember every bump and scrape, and will trade paint in retaliation.

If you’re feeling up to the challenge, GRID launches on PC, Xbox One and PS4 – and is coming to Stadia, too.
