Games Inbox: Buying a PS5 from eBay, The Witcher 4 delay, and Ring Fit Adventure vs. Christmas

How much are you willing to pay? (pic: Sony)

The Tuesday Inbox imagines being able to one day play Resident Evil 1.5, as one reader hopes that Turrican 3D finally gets made.

Final option
All this news about scalpers and the PlayStation 5 is just awful. I just don’t understand why no company is doing anything about it. OK, I do, it’s because either way they get paid, but the optics are not good. That quote from Argos, which basically said that at least it’s cool that people are excited about the PlayStation 5, was so tone deaf it’s almost as if they’re mocking us.

Needless to say I didn’t get a console this month and now I’m faced with either waiting several weeks to go through the whole process again, giving up, or… buying from eBay.

I’m not going for option one, I’m not investing that much time and effort into giving a global corporation hundreds of pounds, but I have to admit I am tempted by eBay. To be honest, given all this trouble, £700 or so isn’t as much of a mark-up as I would’ve been expecting. I can afford it, if the lockdown’s been good for anything it’s saving money, but I resent being forced to these lengths. I think I will though. It’s just tempting to have it all over with, apart from anything else.

Next projekt
Out of curiosity, do we know what CD Projekt are going to do after Cyberpunk 2077? Because somehow I get the feeling they’re not going to get round to it anytime soon. I was one of those that took a refund for Cyberpunk and I really feel no regrets.

Looking back I was kind of taken along by the hype and pretty quickly realised I didn’t like the setting or the first person view. The Witcher 3 I loved though and would happily go back that world, or anything else they made that wasn’t a grimdark first person world.

You can’t say it’s a shame what’s happened as they brought it on themselves but I certainly do feel sorry for the lower level grunts who had no choice in all this. As usual it’s The Man making all the bad decisions and never paying for them.

GC: They’ve implied a new Witcher game, although probably not with Geralt as the lead.

Playable prototype
Chalk me up as another one who loved the Resident Evil Village demo. I really appreciate it when companies do little extras like this and it’s something Capcom seem to be particularly keen on, after the Kitchen VR demo. I think it’s just them polishing up tech demos and internal tests but that only makes it even better for me as I’m always interested in that sort of thing.

If there’s ever a big Resident Evil box set at some point, after they’ve finished all the remakes I’d love to see them add in playable versions of famously abandoned games, like Resident Evil 1.5 and the original versions of Resident Evil 4.

Wouldn’t have to be a lot, I realise these things are not really finished, but I’d find it interesting and it’s something fans have been thinking about for years. It’s certainly a lot cooler than just look at artwork and the usual.

Self-improvement
Although everyone else is more interested in when GTA 6 will be announced I have to admit I’m more excited about what Rockstar might do next that isn’t a sequel. It’s ages since they’ve done a new game and I feel that surely they must be getting the itch again.

I loved Bully and Manhunt but rather than making sequels or remakes I’d much rather they try something new. I feel that making Max Payne 3 greatly improved the gunplay across all their games, which had always been pretty bad, so I wonder if they could make something that was based all around melee combat, and then that could be something that would go on to help GTA 6, Red Dead Redemption 3, and whatever.

Not sure what the theme would be but didn’t they mention they were interested in doing a pirate game at some point? Throw in some good swordfighting and they could end up doing something that would help improve all their games in the future.

Free for all
It seems Microsoft wants to sunset Xbox Live Gold but they don’t want to lose all that revenue. Brad Sams said this too on his latest video. A lot of people just want to play the likes of Fortnite, Call Of Duty, FIFA, and other popular multiplayer games with their friends and aren’t that interested in other games on Game Pass.

I think they should transfer all existing Gold subscribers to Game Pass Ultimate. Give them whatever time they have left on Gold. Probably if Game Pass is made just available to them, they might try it and stick with it.

Make all online play free, although finally making free to play free covers most of the big games being free to play now anyway. I’d make online completely free but incentivise Game Pass with battle passes and in-game currency to give the Gold-only people a reason to keep Game Pass.

Post-Christmas gaming
Ring Fit Adventure is occasionally mentioned in the Inbox but I’d just like to add to the praise and say that I genuinely don’t know what I’d do without it during lockdown, especially post-Christmas!

I stopped playing it sometime last year but put it back on recently to get rid of the Christmas excess and it really is great for how fun it makes some really difficult exercises. A lot of these things I’d never dream of doing if someone just said ‘gimmie five’ but when you’re playing a Japanese role-player against an evil weight-lifting dragon somehow it all seems worth the effort.

The time just flies by too, which is almost as important as I find exercise very boring usually. Really super useful and I’m not surprise to find it’s been a huge hit for Nintendo.

Thornado Prime
Turrican must be pretty far up the list of games I never expected to be see again, so I probably will pick up the compilation, even if it’s not as complete as it should be. I’m surprised to hear that their plans for a new game would be 2D rather than 3D though. I always thought they’d be experimenting with 3D for a while but never got the funding for it?

If the existing games are already a bit samey I’m not sure how they’re going to get round that for a new modern game, but I admit I am curious to find out.

GC: There were 3D prototypes, but apparently Factor 5 want to do another 2D game next.

Company crossover
I think there may be something people are missing in their Star Wars game predictions. One thing Lucasfilm is very big on nowadays is everything being canon, to the point where it’s very likely Cal Kestis will turn up in The Mandalorian or some other show, if he doesn’t die in his own games.

So my thought for what they’re doing right now is that they’ll start making games that have characters that crossover. They do it in the books and comics and shows and everything else so it would actually be odd if they didn’t do it in the games. Except now they’d be games that are from different publishers, which is pretty wild!

Whether that needs all the games to be set in the same time period remains to be seen though. Could you have references going from Fallen Order, just after the prequels, to The Mandalorian, just after the original trilogy, to a new Knights Of The Old Republic game set thousands of years beforehand. I’d like to see them try, maybe with characters that age slowly, of which there are many. I’m really excited to see what these new games are going to be like.

I’m still patiently waiting for Sony to reveal which SSD drives are compatible with the PlayStation 5…
