Games Inbox: 2019’s most anticipated game, Switch Virtual Console, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

The Outer Worlds - is it on your Christmas list?

The Outer Worlds – is it on your Christmas list?

The Evening Inbox is disturbed about EA abandoning the previous Need For Speed reboot, as one reader wants convincing to buy an Oculus Quest.

An ordinary year

Looking at your line-up of Christmas games I can’t say any of them seem all that exciting. The most interesting to me is probably The Outer Worlds and that’s got flop written all over it. And coming out on the same day as Call of Duty?! What is wrong with publishers and release dates? If it was Pokémon or something you could at least say it was a different audience but there’s got to be a lot of overlap between those two games.

Actually, scratch that. Control looks pretty good as well. Although I’m a bit concerned that all the screenshots I’ve seen so far are just in the same grey corridors. I know they’ve said there are other settings, so I hope they’re just avoiding spoilers, but I’d need to know a little more about it before I was convinced.

I don’t think 2019 has much chance of being remembered well though and will probably end up as worse than last year. Still not disastrous or anything but not one anyone’s going to label a classic or even above average.

Uncertain future

A good but not great line-up of games there for the rest of the year, by the looks of it. If I didn’t have my Switch I think things would be looking a bit dry but I’m looking forwards to Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

As for the rest I’m definitely getting a Mega Drive Mini and may get Death Stranding depending on the reviews. Although I’m not sure I’ll necessarily trust them as Hideo Kojima seems to get a bit of a free ride, despite me only enjoying some of his previous games in parts.

I’m also potentially interested in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order but I just can’t connect what we’re told about the game with what we were shown. Has EA become so incompetent they can’t even show off a game properly anymore? I assume they’ll be trying to make amends at Gamescom?
Blade

GC: Weirdly, Fallen Order will not be at Gamescom.

Moving out

My Xbox Live Gold is about to run out and I plan to use the break to concentrate on my PlayStation 4 games so I can get through a few before I go back online. I was wondering if anyone would like to receive my stuff from Fallout 76?

I have tons of bullets and all sorts of junk and even a few decent weapons I could make if anyone wants it. I will probably start a new character when I go back on any way, so I won’t need it. Should anyone wish, they could also take the location of my C.A.M.P. as it sits on a junk pile and spawns a Deathclaw very near it (lots of XP very easily if you can make heavy machine gun turrets).

Let me know on Xbox messages or the Underbox.

Chrematophobia

Everything Nintendo does is weird, which can be good or bad depending on the instance, but what they’ve been doing, or not doing, with the Virtual Console is just incomprehensible. They had all the games right there on Wii, there should’ve been no reason why they couldn’t all have been on the Switch from day one – at the very least the ones they own, never mind the Mega Drive and other games.

Especially given there are so many gaps in the Switch’s schedule which could’ve been neatly plugged by some retro games. Instead all we get is a bunch of NES games that nobody wanted. Presumably they’re going to add SNES as well now but what was the delay in aid of? I don’t get it.

At this rate will be on the Switch 3 before we get any GameCube emulation. But why, to what ends? Why does Nintendo hate money so much?

Button up

I’m still wary of a streaming future for gaming (at least in the short term) but that Microsoft smartphone adapter concept looks interesting. I’d quite like it to slide shut, with the two halves meeting in the middle, so it doubles as a phone case. Preferably with a satisfying ‘click!’.

Not sure what could be done about the controller buttons in that scenario but I imagine they’d be exposed anyway, so we may as well get a shell for the phone out of it.

Final push

Bit of advice please, GC, if you don’t mind.

I’m almost there with the toing and froing in my mind about getting one of these.

I’m currently selling all my Switch games to help pay for the cost and after a lengthy debate, I’ve kind of convinced the wife that the £500 outlay (128GB) is a good thing.

The thing is I need that last little push from either yourselves or your readers.

I don’t dispute that it’s gonna be awesome, that’s a given reading all the reviews. My reservation comes from support for it and how many ‘games’ are being released. I use the term games lightly as I’ve heard the longest can only be four or five hours long.

Looking at the list so far, there is only enough content to satisfy maybe six months of the year, so I’m unclear of what to do.

That’s a lie actually… I’m so excited to get one and that is what’s happening. But I suppose I’m looking for affirmation, so over to you.

Oh and if an answer is going to be, ‘Why don’t you wait to see what is out a year down the line?’
Then my reply is. I can’t… I’m far too excited.
Complexillusion

GC: We’re not comfortable trying to convince someone to spend that much money. You clearly want to get it, but the truth is not many new games have been released since launch.

Orwellian reboot

I assume that reader was implying that Need For Speed getting yet another reboot is a good thing but personally I find it kind of creepy that EA have gone and removed every mention of the last reboot and Payback from everything they do. It’s been purged from YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, you name it… as if it never existed.

Obviously they can’t do anything about it sites or accounts they don’t own but it’s clear that as far as they’re concerned those are now games that didn’t exist. And if they’d happened to have a lot of online options then that would’ve be that, no more game. I’m not sure that sort of thing should be encouraged.

Mortal Kombat: The Musical

By the time this gets used – if it does – Nightwolf will be added to the roster of Mortal Kombat 11. Thing is, with his animal spirit companions make him seem more like Bravestarr – remember that cartoon? It was a one season-wonder from the late 80s and was the law of cartoons from this period it had a really kick-ass theme song.

I thought, to honour the arrival of Nightwolf, I thought I would modify the song to suit him!

Nightwolf!
Nightwolf!

In a future time,
And a faraway place,
The realm of Outworld floats in deep space.
Land of three Kahns
The Emperor brought outlaws by the score!

Nightwolf!
Nightwolf!

Then one day a hero appeared,
With powers of hawk, wolf, puma and bear!
Protector of peace, mystic man from afar
Champion of justice, it’s Nightwolf! Huzzah!

Nightwolf, Nightwolf!
Eyes of the hawk, ears of the wolf!

Nightwolf, Nightwolf!
Strength of the bear, speed of the puma!

Nightwolf… Nightwolf… Nightwolf!

Sadly, nothing rhymes with wolf so I have fudged the ending a bit there…

RE: gcunit, thanks for posting the Joy-Con repair video. After watching first time it looks beyond my capabilities, but I may have a go at a fix after a few more views.
Wallace

Any idea if or when you’ll be reviewing Wreckfest on the PlayStation 4 GC? (Please don’t tell me it’s been delayed again guys.)
JAH

GC: We imagine we’ll review it, as far as we know it hasn’t suffered a new delay.

This week’s Hot Topic

The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Tolly, who asks what’s your favourite strategy video game?

Although they’re usually quite rare there’s been an unusual number of strategy and strategy role-playing games released this summer but what is your favourite of all time? What is it you like about it and how does it compare to both other strategy games and action titles with a similar setting?

If you don’t play strategy games why not, and is there anything that might convince you to give them a go? Do you think they’ll always be a niche genre or could you see them becoming more popular in the future?
