'Game Of Thrones' showrunners want exclusive deal at Netflix, Amazon or Disney

Game Of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are pitching a global deal that will keep them exclusively with whoever signs them, and their main focus is on Netflix, Amazon, and Disney, reports Variety.

It’s the latest development in the upcoming streaming wars, with every major studio set to launch their own platform, jostling for the wallets of a weary subscriber base.

Initial rumours put the Game Of Thrones showrunners with NBCUniversal or HBO’s parent company WarnerMedia, in the deal that will cover film, television, and other platforms.

With movie projects part of the deal, the logical leader would be Disney. Benioff and Weiss are currently developing an untitled Star Wars film that will debut in theatres in 2022. The pair have signed a deal to make multiple Star Wars films, as writers and producers.

So, yeah, it’s not massively logical for them to go anywhere else, especially considering the time commitment involved in making Star Wars movies.

However, one potential sticking point could be the fact Disney’s streaming service Disney+ is very much a family friendly proposition, with none of the freedom the pair got used to at HBO.

But HBO aren’t bitter about the situation. “I think wherever they end up, they’ll be lucky to have them,” HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told Variety.

“They’re some of the best showrunners I’ve ever worked with, and in this talent marketplace, I think everybody should go and get whatever they can. Who knows how long this market will last, so everybody’s gotta go out and get paid.”

Of course, Amazon is also a massive contender, with deep enough pockets to greenlight the most expensive series in history without seeing a single script.

That project is Amazon’s Lord Of The Rings spin-off series, and would seem to be a good fit for Benioff and Weiss. Especially as the show already has Thrones writer / co-executive producer Bryan Cogman on its books as a consultant.

Whoever Benioff and Weiss go to, it’s sure to be a massive story – keep an eye on Yahoo Movies UK for future updates.
