Several fan-favourites, including Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), the Night King (Vladimir Furdik) and Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), are tipped to topple her.
Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is also on the list of possible conquerors, though the King of the North has never shown any real desire to sit on the Iron Throne.
Nevertheless, the former Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch is one to watch out for this season, with a star of the fantasy drama teasing his claim to the throne.
Ser Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) got to know the raven-haired leader very well in season seven of the HBO series when they travelled beyond The Wall.
Their time together has led Ser Jorah to believe Jon can defeat the army of the dead and support Daenerys in her quest to reclaim the seven kingdoms.
“He believes in Jon Snow like a lot of people do and has gotten to know him in their travels together last season,” Iain told Entertainment Weekly.
“He thinks he’s a good match with Daenerys best interests in mind.”
The 57-year-old actor added: “It’s a complicated emotion, but I think he feels that they would be a good unification and he’s basically supportive.”
It is no secret Ser Jorah loved the Mother of Dragons and went through hell and back to prove his undying loyalty to her.
He had to watch when she hooked up with Daario Naharis (Michiel Huisman) and was exiled after she discovered he had been spying on her for King Robert Baratheon.
The ferocious fighter fought greyscale, gladiators and the masked Sons of the Harpy to get back into her good books.
Understandably, he would be jealous, envious even of Jon, but he seems content with serving the Breaker of Chains as one of her trusted advisors.
“Of course, there has always been a profound love there but him wanting a reciprocal physical love has gone and he was just happy to be with her,” Iain explained.
HBO released the Game of Thrones season eight trailer earlier this month, giving fans a sneak peek of what to expect this series.
Game of Thrones creators have promised a “gratifying” ending to the series, which is likely to come as a relief to fans.
There have been suggestions two returning characters with defeat the Night King, following the release of the teaser clip on March 5.
In the video, Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer) and Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju), who were presumed dead walk side-by-side through a tunnel, while carrying torches.
They were last seen in season seven encountering the leader of the Walkers when part of the The Wall fell, sweeping them away with it.
Game of Thrones season 8 returns April 14 on HBO in the US, and the next day on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
