Game of Thrones season 8: ‘Shut up!’ Oberyn Martell star hits out amid ending backlash

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from season eight, episode six of Game of Thrones.

Season eight of Game of Thrones has divided fans of the series with one million people signing a petition to get the last part of the instalment remade.

Many twists including Arya Stark (played by Maisie Williams) killing the Night King to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) destorying King’s Landing, caused an uproar amongst viewers.

And the complaints continued to flood Twitter after episode six of season eight aired last night in the US.

The finale saw Jon Snow (Kit Harington) plunge his dagger into the Mother of Dragon’s heart, which ended in the Stark being sent to live out his days with The Night’s Watch at Castle Black.

The death of Daenerys resulted in Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) being selected to be the leader of the Six Kingdoms, after his sister Sansa (Sophie Turner) demanded the North have independence.

Some fans were left furious with the overall ending, but Pedro Pascal, who played Oberyn Martell in the show, urged viewers to “shut up”.

After the episode aired, he wrote on Twitter: “Shut up, it was perfect. #GameofThrones.”

One of Pedro’s 334,000 Twitter followers commented: “I agree. It was brilliant!! I loved it! Thank you for Oberyn, he’s been missed.”

Another agreed: “It was amazing. Unpopular opinion but I’ve liked this season.”

However, one disgruntled fan commented: “Love you to pieces, Pedro, and there are no words for how much I adored Oberyn… But no. It really wasn’t. I’ve spent eight years invested in this show and I think the novels are some of the greatest works of literature, and I am so disappointed.”

While one fan said: “Sorry Oberyn but you didn’t die for that. Let’s be real.”

Pedro’s time on Game of Thrones as Oberyn was cut short in season four when he fought on behalf of Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) in a trial by combat.

Oberyn fought Gregor Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) but got killed when The Mountain gouged out his eyeballs and crushed his skull.

Following the end of Game of Thrones, Pedro paid tribute to his co-stars and producers as he called the series the “greatest show”.

He captioned the series of shots: “To the mensches who changed my life, I salute.

“To being around the very most gorgeous people, to dental work and to no one messing with Sansa except me when I refuse to let her nap.”

He added: “It changed your lives and mine. #GameofThrones, the greatest show on television… so far.”

Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark, commented on his post: “LOVE YOU SO MUCH.”

Gwendoline Christie, who stars as Brienne of Tarth, echoed Sophie’s reply as she said: “LOVE YOU.”

Game of Thrones episode six, season eight airs tonight on Sky Atlantic at 9pm.
