Game of Thrones season 8: Oberyn Martell plot hole could have changed EVERYTHING

Game of Thrones season eight is a mere 13 days away and anticipation for the finale series of the hit HBO fantasy drama is building.

In fact, some fans are so excited about the upcoming show they have taken to watching older episodes ahead of the programmes release.

After watching the episodes, viewers discuss pivotal scenes on forums, with some recently debating Oberyn Martell final show on Reddit.

Pedro Pascal’s character was killed off the show in season four after fighting the Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) on behalf of Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage).

The showdown was an important part of the series as Oberyn hated the Mountain for slaughtering his relatives and raping his sister.

He had come very close to defeating his incredibly tall opponent, but was brutally murdered when he let his guard down, trying to get the Mountain to confess to his crimes.

It is this scene Game of Thrones fans agonised over on Reddit, with some claiming there was a huge plot hole to have been made when Oberyn’s skull was crushed by the Mountain.

One frustrated commentator opened the debate by suggesting Oberyn was too “smart” to be defeated by the Mountain.

They said: “If the mountain is alive enough to think and answer the question: he is alive enough to kill you. Therefore kill him.”

The person added: “What did you hope to accomplish: mountain telling you that Tywin gave the order in front of 300 people and inside of Tywin’s city? You would never leave alive and the confession would be worth nothing.

“The stupidity of Oberyn’s actions in the end are honestly a plot hole especially if you consider how smart he was depicted before!”

Some Game of Thrones fans disagreed with the user, with a few insisting the scene was not a plot hole, but simply Oberyn making a mistake.

One person wrote in response to the frustrated writer: “Not a plot-hole, in fact it’s the opposite of a plot hole.”

Another said: “That’s not what a plot hole is. Characters can make mistakes. Anyway, killing the Mountain was not the main goal. He needed concrete evidence that Tywin gave the order so that he could bring him to justice. Otherwise it would just be killing a soldier who was following an order.”

A third added: “That isn’t a plot hole. A character acting consistently with what you would do is the character being the character. Characters and shows do not act with perfect knowledge of everything that is going on and they are supposed to be like people and people are irrational sometimes.”

Pascal recently revealed Oberyn’s iconic death scene when the Mountain crushed his skull was filmed without CGI.

In an interview with GQ, he spilled: “Hafþór had tubing through his arms and it would come out from his thumbs.

“He puts his thumbs over my eyes and they start pumping the fake blood. I got teeth made just so that if you got a flash of what my mouth looked like after my teeth got knocked out.”

Concluding, he finished: “Like, they are so meticulous, it’s unbelievable.”

Game of Thrones season 8 returns April 14 on HBO in the US, and the next day on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
