Game of Thrones season 8: Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen BOTH die in finale showdown

Game of Thrones fans think the HBO fantasy hit is about a quest for one lucky character to get the Iron Throne.

But could it actually be a drama concerning a larger religious battle between those who follow the Night King (played by Vladimir Furdik) and R’hollor.

And as a result, the clash could see fan favourites Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) die in the battle.

One Reddit user seems to have worked out a new theory about the upcoming eighth season and how it is all connected to religion.

Paperandinklings proposed: “Is another interpretation of A Song and Ice and Fire the showdown between those following R’hollor and those following the Night King?”

R’hollor is the Lord of Light and is symbolised by a fiery red heart. He is worshipped by Red Priests and many of the characters in the Game of Thrones series, including Melisandre (Carice van Houten).

The Reddit user continued: “So obviously, A Song of Ice and Fire refers to Jon (Rhaegar is Fire and Lyanna is Ice) perhaps also to Jon and Dany (Jon is Ice, Dany is Fire) and but it suddenly occurred to me during my rematch of season three that the real story and war even might be between religions: The Lord of Light/Fire God and the White Walkers/Ice God (Night King).

“If Jon (or Dany) is the Prince(ss) Who Was Promised/Azor Ahai/Warrior of Light/“Son of Fire” then in my opinion there’s a whole new meaning to ASIOF: it’s the story of the showdown between Jon/Dany and the Night King and his army.

“I mean obviously that’s what the show is headed towards for the ending and all but I never made the ASOIF connection before.

“Will this mean the Lord of Light religion and Melisandre will play an even bigger role in the ending?”

They go on to point out how in season four, episode two, Melisandre reveals: “The Septons speak of seven Gods, there are but two. The Lord of Light and Love and Joy and a God of Darkness, Evil and Fear… eternally at war.”

Should this be true, a battle between the Gods would see all of the characters fans know and love turn out to be pawns.

This of course includes Jon and Daenerys, who previously announced they would be going to war against the Night King.

However, if Gods were at work, there’s the potential for everyone to be killed off, including the pair above.

But who will win in the battle between good and evil?

Meanwhile, a new theory has emerged suggesting Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) will become the prophesied Night Queen.

Hidden symbols scattered throughout the Game of Thrones series could suggest there is a big twist in store for fans.

There are a multitude of signs pointing towards the fact Sansa is in line to become a queen.

Her necklace, as one example, is the same as one of the sigils left by the Night King, hinting they are in fact linked.

Game of Thrones season 8 premieres on April 14 on HBO and Sky Atlantic.
