Game of Thrones season 8: How has cast and crew reacted to criticism? Filmmaker speaks out

The final ever season of Game of Thrones has had a rather mixed reception since it premiered on HBO in April. Several GOT fans have gone to extreme lengths to express their dissatisfaction at the series, from an online petition campaigning season eight be rewritten, to the finale The Iron Throne being the lowest-rated episode in the show’s history. Express.co.uk exclusively spoke to Jeanie Finlay, director of HBO documentary Game of Thrones: The Last Watch, to discuss how the criticism has affected the GOT crew.

How has Game of Thrones cast and crew reacted to criticism?

Game of Thrones: The Last Watch features a number of intimate interviews with several of the GOT cast and crew.

HBO viewers get to see exactly how much effort and sacrifice went into making the final ever series of the George RR Martin-created show.

With so much time and effort put into Game of Thrones season eight, Finlay revealed it’s been “tough” on the dedicated staff.

When asked how the Game of Thrones crew members would react to the criticism the series has received, Finlay said: “I think it’s really tough.

“I think it’s hard. You know, people work really really hard and put their heart and soul into it and they do it because they believe in the show and they want it to connect with an audience.

“Game of Thrones is always going to elicit strong emotions and reactions in people because everyone’s invested, it’s 10 years of their lives in it.”

“At the moment, I’d be interested to see how people feel about the show in a month or six months.”

The Game of Thrones documentary-maker also said: “The fans have made the show, they responded to the scale and ambition of production – you can have strong opinions you can feel partisan about it.

“People have strong opinions but that’s what makes it exciting,

“How do you know somebody’s not watched Game of Thrones? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you. People take pride in not watching it and then the people who do watch it feel it in their bones and the petition is just an extension of passion I think.”

The Last Watch director also discussed her own take on the ending to Game of Thrones, a show she’s watched “inside out, upside down, twice.”

Finlay said: “Once it’s all calmed down, because obviously I’ve had the Last Watch coming out I’ve been busy, but I want to watch it all again.

“Last week, I watched the finale with my composer and my editor and it’s like watching a home movie, so I can’t watch it with any perspective.

“I love Emilia (Clarke) so much, I think she’s a brilliant, brilliant actress and Kit’s (Harington) so great, so it’s great to see them but I have no distance from it yet.”

Both Clarke and Harington feature in HBO’s two-hour-long documentary special The Last Watch.

Harington’s reaction at the finale table read is a particular highlight for fans as the candid film captures the actor’s real emotions at the ending.
