Game Of Thrones prequel series House Of The Dragon moving forward

There’s a lot of news coming out of HBO this week, including a range of projects and exclusives being set up for its streaming service, HBO MAX, but very little of that will affect us here in the UK – HBO MAX is very unlikely to launch here, as SKY has renewed its lucrative deal with HBO to broadcast its biggest series, and it looks like at least one of the planned Game Of Thrones spinoffs will join the likes of Watchmen and Westworld.

HBO has cancelled Jane Goldman’s GOT prequel series – starring Naomi Watts – this week, but has given the nod to House Of The Dragon, a different prequel series based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book. 10 episodes of the new show are now in the works, and the main story will take place around 300 years before the events of the recently-completed flagship show.

Established GOT director Miguel Sapochnik (Battle of the Bastards, Hardhome, The Long Night) will be overseeing House Of The Dragon, Deadline confirmed.

“The Game Of Thrones universe is so rich with stories,” said Casey Bloys, president of HBO programming. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”

Per Deadline:

“While narrative specifics on the project based on Martin’s Fire & Blood book are scarce, House Of The Dragon will certainly be rich in the dragonlord ancestors of Daenerys. We also hear that the Dance of Dragons civil war alluded to in the blockbuster GOT TV series that just ended its Emmy-winning eighth season earlier this year, and in the books, may make up a significant part of this prequel’s storyline.”

More on House Of The Dragon as it breaks.
