Lena Headey is used to being a leading lady and a rebel – so she has possibly landed her perfect role as the star of new dramedy, Rita.

The actress has ditched the crown and fight for the iron throne as Game Of Thrones’ Cersei Lannister, and is instead playing a rebellious and unconventional teacher.

According to TVLine, Lena will be facing off against authority while juggling life as a single mum, being completely unfiltered in the process.

In a statement released by Showtime, where the series will set up home in the US, network president Jana Winograde said: ‘Rita is a deliciously subversive character who will make you laugh and cry as she continuously challenges the hypocrisy around her.’

‘It goes without saying that Lena Headey is a force whose essence is ideal to take on this wonderfully dynamic lead role,’ they added.

On top of taking on the leading role, she will be executive producer on the project.

In the meantime, Lena will next be seen in the Netflix’s prequel of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, voicing the character of Maudra Fara.

Joining an unparalleled all-star cast, Lena was only recently announced to be part of the project in a second wave of casting announcements.

She’s joining Sigourney Weaver, Benedict Wong, Awkwafina, Taron Egerton, Anya-Taylor Joy and fellow Game Of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel.

Let’s hope Lena and Nathalie’s characters have slightly more pleasant interactions in this one after what happened in Westeros.

While Game Of thrones might be over, viewers can still get one last treat with a reunion special on the collectors edition of the full series, with the cast reflecting on their time on the show.

At fan conventions as well, Lena has been dropping more easter eggs about what was cut for the sake of time in the final season.

This included a definitive answer about Cersei’s mystery pregnancy that was never truly solved before her character’s farewell.

Confirming the baby did actually exist, and the queen wasn’t faking her pregnancy in order to get security for herself, Lena added that it was one of many things that hit the cutting room floor in the final edit.
