Months after fans noticed a coffee cup in a shot during Game of Thrones‘ final season, series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are finally opening up about the unfortunate incident.
Benioff and Weiss, both 48, opened up about the mistake in an interview for the Japanese news channel Star Channel, with Benioff comparing the mistake to a tradition with Persian rugs.
‘It’s like in Persian rugs, it’s tradition that you make a little mistake in making the rug, because only God can do anything perfect, so for us I guess that’s our thing,’ Benioff said.

Weiss then joked, ‘That’s why I put the coffee cup there,’ adding it was a, ‘conscious, concerted statement of our imperfection,’ as Benioff laughed off the gaffe.
‘We were concentrating so much on Daenerys and Jon Snow that we just didn’t see this coffee cup right in the middle,’ Benioff added.
‘So at first I couldn’t believe it, and then it was an embarrassment because, ‘How did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot?” he added.
Jokes: Weiss then joked, ‘That’s why I put the coffee cup there,’ adding it was a, ‘conscious, concerted statement of our imperfection,’ as Benioff laughed off the gaffe
Concentrating: ‘We were concentrating so much on Daenerys and Jon Snow that we just didn’t see this coffee cup right in the middle,’ Benioff added
‘And then, eventually, it was just funny. This one is just a mistake, and it’s kind of funny to us now,’ Benioff concluded.
Shortly after fans noticed the coffee cup, HBO released a tongue-in-cheek statement about the coffee cup, stating that, ‘The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.’
HBO later edited out the coffee cup for future airings of that particular episode, The Last of the Starks, which aired May 5.

While no one has fully accepted the ‘blame’ for leaving the coffee cup on the set, Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner offered a theory on Conan in June.
‘The coffee cup was where Kit [Harington]’s chair was,’ she began. ‘First I blamed it on Emilia, but I don’t think Emilia would do that.’
‘Kit is lazy and I think he would have done that,’ Turner joked. ‘It was in front of Kit’s chair and then obviously he moved and this picture was taken and it looked like it was in my seat, but I wasn’t there either. It was Kit. It was a hundred percent Kit.’

‘When we first started going to Northern Ireland to film the show, the customs officers would ask us what we were doing and we’d say we’re working on this show and they’d say, “What is it? Game of Thorns?’
‘Then by the third season, we’d see the customs guys – and this literally happened in the Heathrow Airport, and the guy was reading Game of Thrones, George’s book. And we knew that something was starting to cross the threshold of public awareness.’
