Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin has revealed he’s been working on a video game with a Japanese studio.
In a blog post (thanks, Eurogamer), Martin stated that amongst his TV, feature, and book projects, he has “consulted on a video game out of Japan”. While the author gave absolutely nothing else away, a source familiar with the project reportedly told Gematsu that the game – which has been in development for the last three years – is codenamed “GR” and is thought to be an open-world game developed by Dark Souls-creator Hidetaka Miyazaki and Martin. Bandai Namco will reportedly publish the game.
While much of this is conjecture, it adds credence to a similar rumour that popped up in March that also intimated Martin was working with FromSoftware.
We won’t have long to wait to see if this is true, either – according to the source, the game will be unveiled during Microsoft’s E3 2019 press conference on June 9th.
That’s not the only new project expected to be revealed at the upcoming expo show, and Netflix has confirmed it will be hosting a panel at this year’s E3. The panel will be entitled: “Bringing Your Favorite Shows to Life: Developing Netflix Originals into Video Games”, leading to speculation that we’ll see more about the upcoming Stranger Things game adaptation.
While Sony’s unprecedented announcement that it will not be attending this year’s E3 marks the company’s first absence in the expo’s 24-year history, both Nintendo and Microsoft stepped forward on social media to reassure fans that they will have a presence at next year’s show.
EA, too, has announced it will not be holding its traditional E3 press conference this year, but will instead focus on its community-facing events. EA Play will take place from Friday June 7th, 2019 until June 9th, featuring a selection of live streaming events to showcase its upcoming titles where viewers will see “less talk and more play”, with “an event entirely focused on the heartbeat of EA Play: our player communities and the games they love”.
