Gabby Logan: I’m so proud of my brave pal Gareth Thomas for revealing HIV diagnosis

The TV presenter, 46, who grew close to the former Welsh rugby captain after co-hosting a panel show during the Six Nations competition, said: “He was incredibly brave to reveal and share what he did. I am very proud of him. “His actions show real strength and he is a fantastic spokesperson and a great role model for challenging the stigma and prejudice that still surrounds the condition. “Others going through the same thing might feel that they can share their story with their families and, if this is a result of Gareth speaking out, he will definitely have shaped people’s lives for the better.”

Gabby said his example would “offer hope to others”, and added: “His condition shouldn’t stop him from doing anything that he wants to do I hope he will lead a long and happy life and continue to be the amazing person that he is.

“I have never been more proud to call him my friend.”

Gareth, 45, who came out as gay in 2009, revealed he was HIV positive earlier this month, after being blackmailed over his diagnosis.

Former international gymnast Gabby is fronting the World Athletics Championships in Doha for the BBC – and says she can be hard on her own presenting. She said: “I can be critical of my performance and I think it’s really important to watch yourself back from time to time.

“I mean, I don’t watch every show, because that would be a bit neurotic.”

Gabby also took a swipe at critics who ridiculed her World Athletics Championships wardrobe choice in previous years.

Two years ago, she wore a “cowgirl outfit” and found herself compared to Calamity Jane and Toy Story’s Jessie.

“Everyone has got their own personal opinion and I don’t pay much heed, to be honest,” she insisted.

“What I wear does not affect my intelligence or my authority. I don’t think it takes away any IQ points if you want to look glam.

“I feel like I owe it to the viewer to make an effort.”

The World Athletics Championships is on the BBC on TV, radio and online.
